LEGO Architecture 21060 Himeji Castle revealed

The LEGO Group has unveiled its first LEGO Architecture set for 2023, which tackles a Japanese icon in 21060 Himeji Castle.

The 2,125-piece set debuts on August 1 for £139.99 / $159.99 / €159.99, and brings to life the hilltop castle complex in microscale. It’s the first LEGO Architecture set since last summer’s 21058 Great Pyramid of Giza (VIP-exclusive 40585 World of Wonders notwithstanding), and occupies a similarly sprawling footprint at 32cm wide and 27cm deep.

And like the pyramid before it, 21060 Himeji Castle is more than just its namesake: it’s a complete diorama, with a flavour of not only the building itself but also its upper grounds. There are buildable cherry trees – two with green leaves, and two with pink blossom – which add some much-needed colour to the display, in the same way that the Nile and its trees help Giza to properly pop.

The castle’s turrets, asymmetric walls and walkways are all faithfully recreated in white and grey, while there’s even a hint of an interior within the main structure. One of Japan’s few fortresses never impacted by war or earthquakes, Himeji Castle has its roots in the 15th century, and is among the country’s 12 original castles. Today it’s a world heritage site, situated in the Hyogo Prefecture of Japan.

Anyone who’s ever visited the impressive site for themselves will likely find 21060 Himeji Castle at the top of their shopping list come August, but like so many LEGO Architecture sets before it, chances are good this is going to find much wider appeal, too. You’ll be able to pick up yours from LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores from August 1.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
