LEGO Star Wars 75390 Luke Skywalker X-Wing Mech review

LEGO Star Wars 75390 Luke Skywalker X-Wing Mech continues the creative direction of embracing something quite zany and bizarre.

It’s hard to be too serious when reviewing something like LEGO Star Wars 75390 Luke Skywalker X-Wing Mech, or the mechs that have preceded this. That’s not to say that these should be knocked, either.

— Where to buy LEGO Star Wars 75390 Luke Skywalker X-Wing Mech —

LEGO Star Wars 75390 Luke Skywalker X-Wing Mech is available from June 1 at LEGO.com and in LEGO stores, as well as third-party retailers such as Disney Store.

— LEGO Star Wars 75390 Luke Skywalker X-Wing Mech build —

LEGO Star Wars 75390 Luke Skywalker X-Wing Mech follows hot on the heels of 75368 Darth Vader Mech, 75370 Stormtrooper Mech and 75369 Boba Fett Mech, offering up a pretty good minifigure sat within an oversized, clunky, NINJAGO-esque mech, in this case complete with lightsaber and blaster.

It’s kinda goofy-looking, it’s not to be taken too seriously and it’s very Star Wars. Beyond the films and television shows this is a franchise that from very early on embraced various creative directions, be that in merchandising, toys, or both. If you think back to your childhood and how you fell in love with Star Wars, it won’t just be from what you watched on screens or from just movie-accurate, perfectly-scaled replicas of characters and ships. It’ll have also been from the various oddities that caught your imagination for one reason or another and that you just kept coming back to in play.

And that’s exactly what 75390 Luke Skywalker X-Wing Mech is – a nonsensical oddity that LEGO Star Wars has released to further the play potential for younger fans and ever-broaden the Star Wars universe. It looks like an X-Wing that has transformed into a giant mech, and what young LEGO Star Wars fan isn’t going to find that pretty awesome? There are enough details that speak to its existence as a starfighter prior to this transformation, whilst the to-scale lightsaber and blaster help sell the new giant robot mode it has switched to.

It’s bizarre but it feeds into young minds (any eight-year-old can very much imagine this happening to Luke Skywalker and his X-Wing) and it still echoes many other toys that are unique to Star Wars history, whilst also staying true to the source material, at least as best as it can.

Of course all that being said, understanding who it’s for doesn’t make it that much more interesting or worthwhile for older LEGO fans to pick up. It’s a solid build, it’s a novel concept for those of us who really don’t ever want another X-wing (hang on…), and if you are a collector then you’re already committed to picking it up. Otherwise, if you’re at that point in life where things need to make more sense than they did when you were eight, this may be one to walk past.

— LEGO Star Wars 75390 Luke Skywalker X-Wing Mech characters —

LEGO Star Wars 75390 Luke Skywalker X-Wing Mech includes a minifigure version of Luke Skywalker that, honestly, disappoints. We could have received a version similar to 75355 X-Wing Starfighter with duel-moulded legs and printed arms. Perhaps the same exact version isn’t possible so as to keep it exclusive to that UCS set, but having better legs or arms could still have been possible here, particularly for the relatively high price this set comes in at.

— LEGO Star Wars 75390 Luke Skywalker X-Wing Mech price —

LEGO Star Wars 75390 Luke Skywalker X-Wing Mech is priced at £12.99 / $15.99 / €15.99, which places it towards the lower end of prices within the theme. For one minifigure it’s a bit poor in value, but if the concept is intriguing enough to pull you in then there’s a little more to appreciate. Still a little overpriced generally speaking, though.

— LEGO Star Wars 75390 Luke Skywalker X-Wing Mech pros and cons —

LEGO Star Wars 75390 Luke Skywalker X-Wing Mech is for younger fans who are more open to play and creativity. It’s wacky and weird, with clever design points to keep it (relatively) linked to that galaxy far, far away, and it is unafraid to be very clearly targeted towards the LEGO Group’s core audience – children. Not every LEGO set can be for us older folks.
