LEGO Star Wars Cal Kestis 25th anniversary minifigure revealed

Official images of the brand new LEGO Star Wars Cal Kestis minifigure are here, revealing the fifth of up to eight different 25th anniversary characters.

Joining the previously-revealed Darth Malak, ARC Trooper Fives, Saw Gerrera and Darth Maul on shelves later this year, Cal Kestis will make his minifigure debut in 75394 Imperial Star Destroyer (revealed today by German retailer Lucky Bricks). The 1,555-piece set also includes six other minifigures – Darth Vader, a Stormtrooper, Commander Praji and three Imperials – and launches August 1 for €169.99.

Those familiar with Star Wars beyond the confines of TV and movies will recognise Cal from Respawn’s Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor video games, a series that the LEGO Group has only broached with 75335 BD-1 to date. The protagonist’s trusty droid sidekick is absent from 75394 Imperial Star Destroyer, as is his poncho, but the minifigure is equipped with his standard blue lightsaber.

You can obviously swap that out for the lightsaber configuration you prefer – Cal has almost limitless options across the two games, from a Kylo Ren-style crossguard saber to a double blade in pretty much any colour, sans red – but blue makes sense as the character’s starter sword. It’s the one pictured on the game’s box art, after all.

The LEGO Star Wars team and Lucasfilm have also gone route one with Cal’s outfit, which matches the basic fatigues he starts out with in Fallen Order. Like his lightsaber, the Jedi’s costume is completely customisable (especially in Survivor), so leaning on the default option seems like the easiest way to represent Cal for a broader audience.

The lack of a poncho does sting a bit though – it’s a core part of Cal’s outfit in the games, after all. And Qui-Gon Jinn has one in the just-released 75383 Darth Maul’s Sith Infiltrator, so we know they’re not off the table altogether for LEGO Star Wars in 2024. For a first-ever Cal Kestis minifigure, though, this looks pretty good. And like the rest of the 25th-anniversary characters, it’s one we likely would never have received in a regular set.

Speaking of the rest: while the LEGO Group originally promised six different LEGO Star Wars minifigures were on the way to celebrate the theme’s 25th anniversary, the rumour mill suggests the total number of characters may actually be eight. Also said to be on the way later this year are Nien Nunb, Princess Leia (from the Disney+ show Obi-Wan Kenobi) and R2-KT.

Darth Maul – available in the updated LEGO Star Wars Visual Dictionary – is not a 25th-anniversary minifigure in the same way as the rest, though. Instead of giving us a brand new character or variant, the book-exclusive minifigure recreates a retro version of Maul with special 25th-anniversary back printing, mimicking the approach of 2019’s 20th-anniversary minifigures.

R2-KT, meanwhile, is thought to be a ‘bonus’ 25th-anniversary minifigure available as part of a limited-run LEGO Store-exclusive set later this year, modelled on the release strategy of last year’s 40658 Millennium Falcon Holiday Diorama. That seasonal set launched in October and has already retired.

As a result, the core collection of characters – those accompanied by a 25th-anniversary display stand – is likely to total six as originally promised (it’s all semantics really), consisting of ARC Trooper Fives, Darth Malak, Saw Gerrera, Cal Kestis, Princess Leia and Nien Nunb. Check out the respective sets they’re confirmed (or rumoured) to belong to in the table below.

You can also take a look at Nien Nunb and Princess Leia in this promo video from the LEGO Group, which also gave us our first glimpse at Cal Kestis. Given the physical minifigure matches the animated version there, it seems safe to assume the other two will also match their physical counterparts.

75394 Imperial Star Destroyer will be available to purchase from August 1, 2024 for €169.99.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
