LEGO Fortnite is ‘a match made in heaven’

The collaboration between LEGO and Fortnite has sparked an avalanche of reactions across the internet, from pure excitement to wishes for the future.

With the LEGO community boasting millions of people around the world and Fortnite enjoying 231 million monthly active users as of 2023, the collaboration between the two was always going to spark a massive reaction across the internet. With just one day to go before the official launch, here’s a look at what people from both fandoms (and some who are new to both) are saying, hoping, and expecting from the partnership.

If this is the first time you’re hearing of LEGO Fortnite: firstly, where have you been, and secondly, here’s a guide on everything we know so far about the game. All will soon be revealed on the official launch on December 7…

LEGO Fortnite is a great next step for an already-popular game

As the third most played game of the year (falling behind only Minecraft and League of Legends), Fortnite is undeniably already popular. However, LEGO Fortnite has captured the attention of some seasoned players, perhaps bringing their attention to LEGO for the first time in years – or even ever.

LEGO Fortnite has also highlighted why so many people are still playing the battle royale game six years after it first came out in 2017. Continual updates, new chapters, and plenty of fresh content to get stuck into keeps the game relevant and interesting even for long-term players, with LEGO Fortnite just one element of the upcoming Chapter 5 refresh that the game will get. Indeed, as one user points out below, the game has almost exploded into a multiversal experience, a la the MCU.

The sheer amount of LEGO styles is astounding

While not a lot is known about LEGO Fortnite, what we do know is that there are a lot of new LEGO designs. The skins alone amount to more than 1,200. Bearing in mind that Fortnite itself has 1,600 skins in total, this is a massive feat – even if Epic Games has clarified that not every style will be as detailed for the initial launch.

Within the LEGO community, the news of over 1,200 styles has also sparked some tongue-in-cheek comments, with one reddit user writing: “time for ‘LEGO can design 1200 Fortnite figures but are still inaccurate for Clone Troopers’ takes”. But hey, you win some, you lose some.

Fortnite fans are fearful of LEGO price creep

Much of the content that can be regularly unlocked in Fortnite can be done for free, with players earning free items by completing in-game challenges and accessing free content from the Battle Pass. You can also earn free items for tasks like securing your account with two-factor authentication. The amount of free content means that some Fortnite fans are excited but cautious about the possibility of being charged more fore the LEGO collab, with LEGO sets hardly being the cheapest hobby to pick up.

LEGO Fortnite is coming for game-based themes

Of course, Fortnite isn’t the first game-based IP that the LEGO Group has worked with, leading to some drawing direct comparisons with games like Minecraft. LEGO Minecraft has been a long-term and popular theme, with dozens of sets already in production and still more planned for 2024. However, aside from unofficial mods, we’ve never had digital LEGO content for Minecraft. If this Fortnite collab goes well, however, who knows?

LEGO fans can’t wait for more IP crossover

With so many LEGO Fortnite styles planned, we can only hope that some will crossover with existing IPs in the game, such as Star Wars and Marvel. However, it could also be a chance for other LEGO themes to appear in the game, such as NINJAGO as suggested above but perhaps even characters from the LEGO Movie franchise, LEGO Friends characters, or even classic minifigures like LEGO Adventurers or LEGO Castle knights.

That’s all speculation of course; the possibilities are truly endless. We don’t have long to wait to find out for sure, however, with the official launch of LEGO Fortnite taking place on December 7.
