LEGO Indiana Jones sets feature nods to themes from yesteryear

A number of themes from yesteryear are referenced in the upcoming new LEGO Indiana Jones sets, as well as a nod to one of the movie sequels.

Fans of Harrison Ford’s archaeologist will undoubtedly be thrilled by this week’s reveal of three all-new LEGO Indiana Jones sets for 2023. The theme last appeared way back in 2009, but has returned this year, most likely in anticipation of this summer’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

Each of the upcoming models is packed with plenty of features and details to reward builders and fans of the franchise alike, with a number of subtle nods and Easter eggs relating to LEGO themes of the past and even other movies. For instance, in 77013 Escape from the Lost Tomb you’ll be able spot hieroglyphs of C-3PO and R2-D2, an image that was included on the actual set of Raiders of the Lost Ark, as well as stickers of masked characters from Exo-Force and BIONICLE.

77015 Temple of the Golden Idol includes more tongue-in-cheek references, with one sticker featuring King Kahuka, the leader of the Islanders theme from back in 1994. Even the iconic LEGO minifigure can be spotted sticking its tongue out.

In addition, 77013 Escape from the Lost Tomb also appears to reference the Sankara Stones featured in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Two different stickered pieces in the set include images of what might be the legendary sacred artefacts from the 1984 movie, possibly hinting at Indy’s adventures in the sequel.
