LEGO Marvel and DC’s art sets are as varied as LEGO Ideas’

The latest LEGO Batman set offers a new take on LEGO Art, different to what DC or Marvel have tried before but similar to another theme’s efforts.

LEGO DC and Marvel have a storied history with LEGO Art, both getting one of the standard mosaic sets that made up much of the theme’s first sets – 31199 Marvel – Iron Man and 31205 Jim Lee Batman Collection.

Marvel has been more experimental as of late within LEGO Art launching 31209 The Amazing Spider-Man with the titular hero crawling out of the frame.

With one mosaic and one experimental art set under Marvel’s belt, it’s only right for DC to have a turn in response. Though it’s not part of LEGO Art, there’s an undeniable connection with the theme in 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City, not least of all as it can be hung on a wall.

While Marvel’s more experimental LEGO Art set is a modification of a standard mosaic similar to 31208 Hokusai – The Great Wave, Truman Cheng’s project that inspired 21333 Vincent van Gogh – The Starry Night closely resembles 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City. Combined with 21340 Tales of the Space Age and LEGO Ideas is just as varied for artistic LEGO models as the other major themes.

Though it’s not part of LEGO Art technically, LEGO Marvel and DC are now tied for their artistic models, whether that be intended by the designers or simply a coincidence. The difference between the approach in 31209 The Amazing Spider-Man and 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City is stark though, to say the least.

Together, they may pair well on display but arguably the best combination is going to be 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City and 21333 Vincent van Gogh – The Starry Night for how similar their concepts are, despite the different source materials. Each even includes at least one completely exclusive minifigure.

LEGO Batman 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City will launch on April 1 for LEGO Insiders (and April 4 for everyone else) for £259.99 / $299.99 / €299.99.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
