LEGO plans to open more official stores in India ‘very soon’

With just one official LEGO Store in the whole of India currently in Mumbai International Airport, things could be changing for Indian fans ‘very soon’.

India has the largest population of people of all countries in the world, having overtaken China in 2022 with more than 1.43 billion people. That represents a massive market for any company and one that’s been paying off for the LEGO Group. Speaking to Exchange 4 Media in an interview, the LEGO Group’s Country Manager for India Bhavana Mandon explained how India is a growing priority for the company.

“Last year, we grew by over 100% and, given the small base that we were at, it is scratching the surface as yet,” she said. “We definitely want to make it even bigger here.”

The LEGO Group places great emphasis on “creating experiences”, resulting in unified LEGO Stores, LEGOLAND, and Discovery Centres around the world. However, India is only home to one official LEGO Store and that’s tucked away in Mumbai International Airport, rather than one that’s convenient for locals to visit. When asked whether that would be changing, Ms Mandon confirmed that expansion is on the cards.

“Very soon is going to be my answer and you will see the LEGO stores in India as well,” the Country Manager explained. “As a team, we have been working towards it and we are excited about what we are preparing.”

This comes after the LEGO Group delivered on its promised target to build more LEGO Stores in 2023. For the LEGO Group, these retail locations are more about having a base to connect with consumers, rather than drive sales, according to CEO Niels B. Christiansen in a recent presentation about the 2023 financial results. To deepen the already-growing Indian market further, it makes sense for the company to now be prioritising physical stores. While there’s no precise indication of when this will be, we can only hold to Ms Mandon’s promise of ‘very soon’.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
