The LEGO Star Wars 25th-anniversary minifigure line-up just shifted again

It’s all change again for the LEGO Star Wars 25th-anniversary line-up, with one of the six previously-reported characters now rumoured to be replaced by another mystery minifigure.

The LEGO Group confirmed earlier this year that a total of six different 25th-anniversary minifigures will be spread throughout the 2024 LEGO Star Wars range, three of which have already been revealed or released in Darth Malak, ARC Trooper Fives and Saw Gerrera. The final three were initially believed to consist of Jedi: Fallen Order’s Cal Kestis, young Princess Leia from the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series, and astromech droid R2-KT, who was designed to honour the late Katie Johnson.

At least one of those three remaining characters is no longer believed to be a 25th-anniversary minifigure, however, as 75396 Escape from the Sarlacc Pit is now rumoured to include its own 25th-anniversary character. Given there are only six total (not counting the Darth Maul redux included in the latest LEGO Star Wars Visual Dictionary), that must be replacing one of the previously-rumoured minifigures – at least if this latest info is correct.

According to Clay_Bricks (via Brick Clicker), the most likely candidates are R2-KT and young Princess Leia. Those characters are still said to be on the way, but one of them is likely to just be a standard minifigure, without the printed baseplate included alongside other 25th-anniversary characters. Leia is thought to be arriving in 75392, a set currently slated to be a ‘creature build’, while R2-KT is rumoured to be included in 40755, a LEGO Store-exclusive 25th anniversary set.

If Leia isn’t a 25th-anniversary minifigure, that positions 75392 as an Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series set, but creatures from that show are few and far between. There’s always a chance that we could be looking at a large-scale buildable L0-LA59 (or Lola), the princess’s tiny palm-sized droid, with an accompanying Leia minifigure situated on a display stand (along with a tiny minifigure-scale Lola).

What feels more likely at this stage – given the reception to the Kenobi TV series was relatively mixed, and the LEGO Group has been reluctant to return to even critically-acclaimed Star Wars shows like Andor – is that R2-KT is simply part of a wider character line-up of the LEGO Group’s own making in 40755, which is rumoured to also include three Stormtroopers and three Rebel Fleet Troopers and is currently tentatively titled ‘Star Wars 25th Celebration’.

While no other details have been provided on that set so far, it sounds like the makings of some kind of celebratory diorama, perhaps tipping its hat to an animated short created for the LEGO Star Wars 25-second Film Festival. And as the crux of the LEGO Star Wars team’s 25th-anniversary celebrations hinge on introducing characters we wouldn’t otherwise see, using a specific 25th-anniversary set to include a few special extras like R2-KT – even if they don’t have the printed baseplate of the main six – doesn’t seem too far-fetched.

We really don’t know either way at this stage though, and the identity of the 25th-anniversary minifigure supposedly included in 75396 Escape from the Sarlacc Pit is just as much of an enigma. One possibility could be Nien Nunb, given how heavily May the 4th poster artist Joe Hogan has been teasing the character’s introduction on social media, but we won’t know for sure until the LEGO Group officially unveils the rest of this year’s LEGO Star Wars range.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
