LEGO Star Wars May the 4th poster artist all but confirms unreleased minifigure

The artist behind the new LEGO Star Wars May the 4th Insiders poster has all but confirmed at least one unreleased minifigure is on the way – and it isn’t one that fits into the 2024 rumour slate…

Coming to the Insiders Rewards Centre from May 1 to 5 – where it will be available to redeem for 1,800 points – the limited-edition print is the work of artist Joe Hogan, inspired by similar artwork produced for Star Wars Celebration 2022. The poster depicts dozens of LEGO Star Wars minifigures drawn from across the entire saga, including the mainline movies, the Disney+ TV shows, classic Star Wars video games and even the LEGO Group’s own lore.

Both 7163 Republic Gunship’s Jedi Bob and The Force Unleashed’s Starkiller are featured, for example, the former updated with skin tones rather than his classic yellow head. Most interesting though is the presence of Nien Nunb, Lando Calrissian’s Millennium Falcon co-pilot in Return of the Jedi, who stands out as the only character featured on the poster who has never appeared as a physical minifigure.

In an Instagram post revealing the poster, artist Joe Hogan teased the presence of these updated or never-before-seen minifigures with the telling caption: “Can you spot any old favourites? Any new ones? And wait… are those…? Never mind!” But here’s where things get really interesting: in the comments underneath the post, the artist has all but confirmed Nien Nunb will get his first-ever minifigure sometime soon.

In response to a fan asking after the Sullustan, Joe wrote: “LEGO wouldn’t want me to put any unofficial minifigs on this one! Soooooo…” He then added: “I would never break an NDA! But IF there were any new minifigures in this illustration and LEGO released the image… and I got the green light to also share this image… I guess the secret would be out, huh?”

If LEGO Nien Nunb really is on the way, it may not be in 2024: the current rumoured LEGO Star Wars slate doesn’t include an obvious place for him to pop up, even while reports pertaining to minifigures are generally not quite as reliable as they once were (75383 Darth Maul’s Sith Infiltrator was once rumoured to include Padmé and Captain Panaka, but actually includes neither).

There’s always a chance that the LEGO Group has an extra secret set up its sleeve, or that Nien Nunb might pop up in 40755 Star Wars 25th Anniversary Celebration, but otherwise we’re probably looking at a 2025 release (at the earliest) for this highly-requested character… if he exists at all. Joe could still be teasing something he’s not entirely sure is coming, even if it makes logical sense from his perspective.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
