LEGO Technic 42154 2022 Ford GT review

LEGO Technic 42154 2022 Ford GT is the supercar we’ve been waiting for, acting as a budget-friendly alternative to the larger Technic vehicles.

The LEGO Group’s depiction of the Ford GT has been limited to Speed Champions before 42154 2022 Ford GT, only recreating the iconic shapes of the car at a much smaller scale. However, the huge Technic model allows for functions, details and a form not like any LEGO Ford GT before it.

42154 2022 Ford GT offers an affordable alternative to the theme’s top-of-the-range supercars like 42143 Ferrari Daytona SP3 – but can it deliver an equally satisfying build with a smaller budget?

— LEGO Technic 42154 2022 Ford GT build —

LEGO Technic sets are inherently more complicated than your usual System build, and this will take you longer than you expect to put together if you’re unfamiliar with Technic. However, the extra effort and wait are worth it as 42154 2022 Ford GT feels equal to some of the biggest LEGO Technic supercar recreations at a fraction of the price.

The model is essentially split into three parts, with the instructions starting from the back and making their way towards the front, beginning at the rear with the engine and finishing with the lights and the bonnet. The most complicated features are packed within the back of the build, including the working V6 engine so it may take a bit more patience to start. Using the standard technique for pistons, one that continues to work excellently, the engine is admittedly not wholly accurate to the car with the real engine showcasing no visible parts.

However, a LEGO set showing the inner workings plays to the strengths of the brick-building system, ensuring that your hard work is proudly on display. 42154 2022 Ford GT takes that one step further with transparent engine elements housing the pistons. Being able to admire and show off the mechanism inside without removing a host of elements is one of the set’s most enticing features, and something that we’d like to see introduced to more massive LEGO Technic cars.

Keeping to the back of the build, the shaping uses a blend of Technic and a few System pieces to masterfully recreate the unique form of the modern Ford GT design. The interior segment in the middle of the model has a few notable details but nothing too major to appreciate. The decision to include the only lever for the spoiler mechanism inside the car is interesting, as it makes it harder to operate, but it is undoubtedly more accurate than having a random lever on the side of the car.

The standout feature of the middle of 42154 2022 Ford GT is its butterfly doors, and the genius device used to recreate them entirely in LEGO. The opening butterfly door feature is fun to play with, though you may find the L-shaped Technic bracket getting stuck in the open sides of the chassis’ foundations. In our testing, this happens more frequently than we’d like and it’s an annoying aspect of this otherwise impressive function.

From the exterior, the front of the model is another example of this set’s expert recreation of the Ford GT’s design. One of its functions is a bit disappointing, but expectations were admittedly low for this particular feature. The bonnet has a lifting section showcasing a bit of the mechanism, but it only showcases just that – a bit. While the engine’s accessibility and a showcase of the inner workings are appreciated, the front’s attempt at this feels shallow in comparison to the transparent engine blocks at the back.

Another disappointing aspect of the model is the exposed axles on show at the end of the front wheels. While the chassis’ integration of working suspension, steering and a differential mechanism is great, something to cover up this remaining aspect of the device would have been much appreciated as it naturally draws your attention away from other parts of the model.

After working your way through all three segments of 42154 2022 Ford GT, the final result is a wonderful recreation of this iconic car and one that we’ve been waiting for ever since 75881 2016 Ford GT & 1966 Ford GT40. The design team has opted for an interesting take on the usual massive Technic car formula and it takes advantage of the unique offerings of this theme compared to System LEGO models, although the car isn’t perfect.

— LEGO Technic 42154 2022 Ford GT price —

It’s safe to say that 42154 2022 Ford GT is on an equal level to the rest of the LEGO Technic 18+ supercar recreations. However, there’s a twist. 42154 2022 Ford GT is £65 less than the next dedicated car recreation aimed specifically at ages 18 and up, 42125 Ferrari 488 GTE AF Corse #51. As expected, it’s a bit smaller than the rest of the collection but Technic sets aren’t all about size; it’s the functions that matter in these models.

When it comes to features, 42154 2022 Ford GT is equal to the bigger 18+ supercars. This model could have been £15 more expensive and still felt like a fair deal, especially compared to bigger vehicles from both LEGO Icons and Technic, but it’s not. For those getting started with LEGO Technic’s more complex creations or wanting to pick up 42154 2022 Ford GT to expand your brick-built garage, you won’t be disappointed with it for the RRP as it’s surprisingly good value in terms of volume, pieces, functions and even comparing it to much more expensive sets.

— LEGO Technic 42154 2022 Ford GT pros and cons —

Suffice to say, 42154 2022 Ford GT surprised us. For the price, we weren’t expecting something visually on par with some of the bigger LEGO Speed Champions sets and we certainly weren’t expecting an innovation to a standard LEGO Technic feature, with transparent elements showcasing one of the most impressive mechanisms in the model (even at the cost of accuracy).

42154 2022 Ford GT isn’t the perfectly-accurate LEGO model of the iconic car that you may have been waiting for. Instead, the designers have chosen to highlight unique aspects of the creation provided by the Technic system of pieces and this helps the set to stand out, to the point you’ll find yourself admiring the shapes and working functions of this recreation time and time again.

Had it been at the same price as some of the bigger LEGO Technic cars, it wouldn’t be as easy to recommend, but it stands at a fraction of the cost, changing our impressions and expectations drastically. There are some minor flaws and an annoying function that jams occasionally, but it’s still worth your time.

— Alternatives to LEGO Technic 42154 2022 Ford GT

The other LEGO Ford GT models have now retired, meaning the next closest alternative will depend on whether you are looking for a Ford or Technic experience. For a Ford model, you’ll need to venture outside of LEGO Technic with 10265 Ford Mustang still available at the time of writing, and coming in at a similar size to 42154 2022 Ford GT.

As for LEGO Technic, while some of the larger and more expensive sets are comparable to 42154 2022 Ford GT, they aren’t in the same price range so instead, you might be better suited looking at either 42111 Dom’s Dodge Charger or 42127 The Batman – Batmobile. The former is the same price in most regions, and the latter is cheaper and could pair with 42155 The Batman – Batcycle, too.
