LEGO unveils custom 140,000-piece Dungeons & Dragons table

The LEGO Dungeons & Dragons one-shot is now available to watch featuring a giant custom LEGO table and designing it was a challenge.

Those who watched the three-hour LEGO Dungeons & Dragons one-shot yesterday may have take note of the huge brick-built table that they played on. While it’s unlikely to be available for purchase, the LEGO Group have shared more details on how this 140,845-piece table was put together over 482 hours, weighing 142 kg.

The table measures 140cm by 200cm and was designed in part by Senior Engineer Manager Specialist Libor Udržal and 3D & Model Box Designer Marek Vaší?ek.

“My first thought was whether it would be possible to do it purely with the bricks?” says Udržal. “We could have used an ordinary table and dressed it with bricks, but we like to challenge what’s possible to do with LEGO bricks.

“But while deciding to do it entirely from bricks gave us freedom, it also came with challenges. A table needs to be strong enough so the players can sit around it, put their arms on it and lean on the table. But I also wanted plenty of Dungeons & Dragons details.”

Balancing functionality with the presentation was likely especially challenging with this massive LEGO table and the final product features a Dungeon Master screen on end featuring a dragon head and a pair of wings.

“D&D® is all about unleashing your imagination and being able to create whatever scenario you want,” says Vaší?ek. “When I play with my friends, it’s like making our own film or story, but with no rules, no bounds. I wanted the table to enable this.”

Details highlighted on the official online store’s post include brick-built logos around the single-pillar base and the fact that the table is laid out in 3×3 plates to use the table as a map for encounters.

Don’t expect this massive LEGO table to be made available for purchase, though you can pick up 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale now and watch the specialised adventure being played by clicking on the above video.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
