Seven retiring LEGO sets with brilliant discounts at Zavvi

Zavvi currently has tempting discounts on dozens of sets, including plenty that are due to retire in the next few weeks. Here’s seven worth grabbing before they’re gone.

We’re rapidly approaching the end of 2021, which means the imminent departure of more than a few sets – from mainstays like 10258 London Bus to products that only launched at the beginning of the year, including 80106 Story of Nian.

Thankfully, a last-minute shopping spree doesn’t have to mean breaking the bank, because Zavvi is offering end-of-the-line discounts on both those sets and plenty more. But act fast: there’s no telling how long these prices – or stock of these seven sets – will last…

7 – Harry Potter 75953 Hogwarts Whomping Willow

One of the earliest additions to the modular Hogwarts system that landed on shelves between 2018 and 2020, 75953 Hogwarts Whomping Willow’s external castle walls are versatile enough to justify grabbing multiples for a truly expansive Wizarding World layout. The 753-piece set has already sold out at LEGO.com, but Zavvi currently has it available for just £47.99 – a cool £12 off its original retail price.

6 – Chinese Traditional Festival 80106 Story of Nian

The LEGO Group’s Chinese Traditional Festival sets have a shorter shelf life than most, which is why this 2021 model is already on the way out. Both 80106 Story of Nian and the long-gone 80107 Spring Lantern Festival will soon be replaced by two new Lunar New Year builds, so make sure to grab the smaller (but no less impressive) of this year’s seasonal sets before it’s gone. If you do so through Zavvi, you can currently save £10 on its retail price, bringing the final total down to just £49.99 for 1,067 pieces. Bargain.

5 – Marvel 76125 Iron Man Hall of Armour

Since pretty much day one of LEGO Marvel, we’ve dreamed of building a huge hall of armour for Iron Man’s suits. Thankfully, the LEGO Group has done the hard work for us with a readymade starting point in 76125 Iron Man Hall of Armour. The £54.99 set includes four different Iron Men, and is available for just £42.99 at Zavvi at the moment. But like every other set on this list, it’s also not long for this world, so grab it while you can.

4 – Super Mario 71369 Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle

Zavvi has slashed the asking price for the flagship set of LEGO Super Mario’s initial wave by a huge £25, bringing 71369 Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle down to just £64.99. That’s a great price for one of the best additions to the interactive theme to date – and given it’s already listed as ‘sold out’ through official channels, you won’t find a better deal on a retiring set than this.

3 – Architecture 21052 Dubai

The Architecture theme skipped Skylines in 2021, but there are still plenty of older cities to pick up while we wait for the rumoured addition of Singapore in 2022. Among those is 21052 Dubai, which offers one of the most enjoyable building experiences of the entire subtheme – and is about to disappear for good. In fact, it already has from LEGO.com, so your best bet now is picking it up from Zavvi, where it’s discounted from £54.99 to £42.99.

2 – Creator Expert 10258 London Bus

The oldest Creator Expert vehicle still on the market, 10258 London Bus is reaching its final destination in 2021. But before it terminates its journey for good – just as it already has at LEGO.com – you can hop aboard one last time through Zavvi, which has also knocked £10 off its asking price. That’s not the biggest discount on this list, but sales on Creator Expert sets are rare enough anyway. Scoring one on a sold-out set only sweetens the deal, and makes this bus well worth buying a ticket for.

1 – Technic 42100 Liebherr R 9800 Excavator

Still wearing the crown of ‘the largest LEGO Technic set of all time’ even as it reaches retirement, 42100 Liebherr R 9800 Excavator is a landmark build in more ways than one. For instance, it’s also full to the brim with tech: its CONTROL+ hub and motors alone would cost £359.91 to buy individually, so Zavvi’s current price for the 4,108-piece machine – £299.99, a full £100 off its RRP – is an absolute steal.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
