The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part 70841 Benny’s Space Squad review

In 70841 Benny’s Space Squad, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part set that is sure to be a smash hit with Classic Space fans, you will come for the minifigures but stay for the builds

Price: £8.99 / $9.99 / €9.99  Pieces: 68  Available: December 26

One of the stand-out characters in The LEGO Movie is Benny, with his Classic Space stylings harking back to a simpler time. The crack in his helmet represents the nostalgia that adults have for those early minifigures, hanging on to them even if they have the odd imperfection. In The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, it looks like Benny is getting a crew – and 70841 Benny’s Space Squad introduces them.

This set almost feels tailor made for Space fans, coming in at a low price and containing four different coloured space explorers with a classic style. Benny’s new chums are named Kenny (in yellow), Lenny (in pink) and Jenny (in white). This is the first time that a LEGO space explorer has ever been released in a pink uniform.

Benny is unchanged from when the minifigure was available in The LEGO Movie theme, aside from a slightly different expression. His box mates all do an impressive job of replicating the original Space minifigure design, almost indistinguishable from the original versions. They even have the classic smiling LEGO minifigure face, after its disappointing omission in 10260 Downtown Diner and 10264 Corner Garage. These minifigures are absolutely perfect, exactly what any fan picking up this box will want.

What is a surprising treat in this set are the three builds. Given the price and desirability of the minifigures, no further bricks were needed, yet here they are. The mini space vehicles and robot absolutely scream Classic Space, replicating the small vehicles that were part of the theme, yet managing to use new pieces. It is amazing to see a 40 year old theme evoked so successfully while using modern elements. The slope features a printed Space logo rather than a stickered one, which is a nice treat.

This set is a must-have. Given its low price point and the desirability of the minifigures included, it will not be a case of whether to buy it, but how many copies to buy.
