27,000-piece LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 model is touring the world

A massive LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 model with over 27,000 pieces has been revealed and it could be coming to an event near you this year.

A life-sized LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 is just a small part of the 25th-anniversary celebrations of the theme in 2024 and a video showcasing the construction of the build has been shared online. The celebrations also include a short film festival and new sets featuring unique minifigures.

The huge R2-D2 recreation is made up of 27,797 LEGO elements and depicts the droid rolling forward with its third leg extended. Electronics are used for lights and to turn the domed head, similar to what was done for the big Bowser build but on a smaller scale.

The video reveals that there are at least three of the huge droids in existence, meaning that they can keep at least one in the US and at least one in Europe to make it easier to tour the brick-built astromech around during the anniversary year.

This year’s Spielwarenmesse event in Germany was the first location to showcase the life-sized R2-D2 model but it won’t be the last. The droid is coming to locations throughout the US and Europe in 2024, though exactly where and when has not been confirmed.

R2-D2 is a major part of the LEGO Star Wars 25th anniversary plans, featuring on the new logo for the event as well as getting a brand new LEGO set – 75379 R2-D2.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
