How LEGO upgraded from 10220 Volkswagen T1 Camper Van to 10279 Volkswagen T2 Camper Van

The newly-available 10279 Volkswagen T2 Camper Van is a welcomed update to the much-loved 10220 Volkswagen T1 Camper Van – but just how different are they?

10279 Volkswagen T2 Camper Van isn’t just a new design, it’s a recreation of a completely different camper van. While the general structure has stayed the same, there are plenty of key differences that make it worth a second look, even if you’re a happy owner of the original 10220 Volkswagen T1 Camper Van.

Of course, the colour is the most notable change. While 10220 Volkswagen T1 Camper Van was letterbox-red, 10279 Volkswagen T2 Camper Van comes in a refreshing cyan colour. Another more immediate difference to notice is that the T2 has sliding doors, in comparison to the T1’s regular swing doors.

Any minifigures travelling in 10279 Volkswagen T2 Camper Van will also have more room to play with, as the slanted roof compartment extends higher than in 10220 Volkswagen T1 Camper Van, which just extends straight up by a centimetre or two.

The LEGO people will also be able to relax outside more easily, with impressively realistic-looking outdoor chairs to sit back and chill on. There’s also a brick-built surfboard for them to hit the waves with. While 10220 Volkswagen T1 Camper Van has no external accessories, the surfboard might have been hinted at in some surf-themed artwork inside the camper van.

The new design also reflects the times, with modern appliances like a fridge inside the T2. In comparison, the T1 had only a table that could convert into a bed without many electrical mod-cons.

All of these differences do contribute to the price tag of 10279 Volkswagen T2 Camper Van, jumping up to £149.99 / $179.99 / €159.99, compared to 10220’s retail price of £84.99 / $119.99 / €99.99. You can buy it from today from the online LEGO store, licensed retailers, and official LEGO shops.
