BrickLink spotlighted in new report on LEGO’s potential next move

A new report on where the LEGO Group could go next shines a spotlight on BrickLink, the online marketplace owned by the company.

The Financial Times has published a story on the growth of the LEGO Group, with a video that takes a deep dive into the past, present and future of the company. The report focuses on the success of the LEGO Group branching out into more diverse non-toy areas such as movies, TV shows and apps, the rise of adult collectors and a specific spotlight being shone on BrickLink.

The video explains how many fans and collectors are making serious profits from the service, often seeing returns of up to 200% from online sales of sets, parts and minifigures. The report also comments on how some within the reseller community are sceptical as to exactly what the LEGO Group wants to do with BrickLink, asking questions such as did TLG buy the platform to shut down the competition?

An official statement from the LEGO Group that’s shown in the video reads:

lego

‘BrickLink is the world’s largest online community and marketplace for adult fans and we’re proud it’s part of the LEGO Group. It currently has 1.6 million members and more than 8,000 stores and we will continue to invest in the platform and grow membership and engagement.

We’ve introduced the successful BrickLink Designer Program, recently launched a ‘My Own Creation’ Shop pilot and made improvements to the marketplace.’

The video also touches on the LEGO Group’s recent attempts to produce oil-free ABS bricks and become more of a sustainable company. The FT was the first media outlet to report on the LEGO Group’s efforts to create new materials from recycled bottles and offset carbon emissions, before the plans were ultimately scrapped.
