Five things you need to know about attending a LEGO event

If you’ve ever thought about displaying your LEGO builds at events, here are a few important things you should know.

LEGO events are a fantastic way to not just show off your skill at building, but also meet fellow LEGO fans of all ages and levels. Whether you’ve been building for a long time or have just started, there’s a place for everyone at display events.

Hear from some Brick Festival regulars on what you need to know about LEGO building and displaying – including what to expect when you attend your first event.

5 – You can display LEGO builds of any size

You might think you need to have an enormously detailed set with thousands of pieces to display at LEGO events, but there’s space for builds of every size to shine. For example, Bricks Are Heavy hadn’t thought about displaying, having worked largely with small pieces and custom or painted minifigures – but after being offered a space on someone else’s table, quickly grew to love displaying! His very first display model was a minifigure zip line piece in a glass display dome, showing you don’t need a lot of elements to show off a clever idea.

At the end of the day, a love of LEGO is a love of creativity – and that can shine through in builds of any size.

4 – Bring a box of extras

Whether you’re building big or small, it’s always best to prepare for any situation. Travelling to a LEGO event could impact your build and cause you to lose elements, so having a little box of extras that you can use for a speedy repair job is a top tip from Sabrina and Matt Kelly, who regularly display at Brick Festival, along with their two children.

“What also is handy to bring along is some extra bricks, a pair of scissors, some cardboard to even out wobbly table legs, or enough batteries when you have some motors running,” said Sabrina.

3 – It’s all about the people

While building LEGO might be a solo or small group activity usually, displaying at LEGO events is a great way to meet more people from the community.

“My number one tip for beginners would be to go to events and talk to people!” Bricks Are Heavy told us. “You meet some really nice people…I like being about to talk to people about the process and show people what I use.”

Events like Brick Festival bring together people from across the country who all love LEGO, so you’re unlikely to find a better opportunity to display and chat about LEGO!

2 – LEGO displays appeal to every generation

Plus, you get to meet people from all walks of life. From LEGO Masters contestants to families who build and display together, there are people of all ages and backgrounds.

“It is fascinating how different generations react to the same display differently,” Matt Kelly told Brick Fanatics. “The parents who remember having had sets like that when they were a child, grandparents who remember their secret LEGO stash in the loft, and kids who especially love any movement or light effects.”

1 – You don’t have to travel far to display at LEGO events

Even if you don’t live near a major city, there’s probably a LEGO event not too far from you in the UK. Brick Festival and Showmasters are hosting dozens of LEGO events around the country this year, with years of experience in hosting fantastic and varied LEGO events. With shows in Brentwood, Leeds, Newport, Exeter, Carlise and many more currently on the calendar, you’re bound to find one near you.

You could also be in with a chance of winning a £1,000 LEGO voucher if you introduce yourself to Brick Festival in the next few weeks, so there’s never been a better time to dip your toe into the world of LEGO displaying than now. Find out more about the full terms and conditions here.
