How many LEGO Marvel Groot sets are too many?

Groot appears to have become the R2-D2 of LEGO Marvel, taking up many models and there’s rumoured to be at least one more on the way.

Just as the LEGO Star Wars design team has an infatuation with R2-D2 builds, not to mention the droid’s minifigures, Groot is quickly becoming the icon of LEGO Marvel.

Including Groot minifigures, the character has been in 12 Marvel models including minifigures. Excluding minifigures, there are five buildable Groot figures (including one that is rebuildable into another form) throughout sets from 2014 to 2024 and rumour has it this won’t be the end.

A new list of rumoured LEGO Marvel sets from reliable Instagram user brick_clicker and relayed by itavixbrix features 76297 Dancing Groot, which is believed to be a larger model of the character as he is depicted in 40671 Potted Groot. It’s also rumoured that the set may be able to dance via a mechanism operated by a handle.

That would bring the total number of Groot models up to six, matching that of R2-D2. While this might seem like enough, the truth is that there are plenty of other forms that Groot has taken that could inspire sets. Looking at the I Am Groot series specifically, merchandise already exists for the character in pyjamas, covered in leaves and as a topiary.

As much as the LEGO Group’s Groot models are numerous, it may only just be the beginning of builds based on the character if rumours are anything to go by. Nothing has been officially confirmed just yet but for Groot enthusiasts, a bright brick-built future could be ahead.
