LEGO Star Wars 75365 Yavin 4 Rebel Base is a bit expensive, say early reviews

The full slate of early reviews for LEGO Star Wars 75365 Yavin 4 Rebel Base is now available, and the verdict isn’t entirely positive.

Before the highly-anticipated 75365 Yavin 4 Rebel Base launches on August 1 for £149.99 / $169.99 / €169.99, it’s time to take a more in-depth look at the upcoming model and more early impressions seem to match that of a retailer’s review before the latest selection.

It’s not all bad for those planning to pick up the LEGO Star Wars set, though the price might be a tough pill to swallow compared to the contents, should the early reviews be anything to go by.

The Y-wing is a sleeper hit

Most of the early reviews agree that the Y-wing, while small and not the right size to scale with minifigures, is a delight and does a good job of capturing the most important parts of the starfighter at this scale.

“Despite the size, I think the Y-wing is the most interesting part of the set,” writes The Brothers Brick.

A comparison to other midi-scale LEGO Star Wars ships might seem obvious, but it offers a good perspective of the techniques the LEGO Star Wars design team uses.

“The design reminds me of 75312 Boba Fett’s Starship, which also retains much of its character from larger equivalents, but comprises far fewer pieces,” notes Brickset.

While the lack of a larger Y-wing is felt in early reviews, the overall impression is that this smaller alternative is a great stand-in and is the right size for the model. Solid Brix Studios agreed, stating, “I wish we got a full-size Y-wing but the base would need to be bigger to accommodate that”.

Yavin IV’s rebel base is surprisingly empty

As well-reviewed as the Y-wing is, the rest of the base isn’t looked on as favourably in early reviews with many taking note of the empty interior space and some inaccurate rooms, even for a LEGO set.

“Admittedly, very little of Base One is explored in the movie and the required rooms are already included. Nevertheless, perhaps a docking station for the personnel carrier could have occupied the ground floor, beside the hangar,” writes Brickset, noting the empty rooms on either side of the hangar.

“Much of the space is completely wasted and several rooms are too reliant on stickers, otherwise, they would be unrecognisable.”

Brickset’s review goes on to describe how the command centre should be a dark room and that the presence of white bricks in this space is confusing. Some reviews offered potential solutions to the interior, even for a greater cost.

“I did get a bit nostalgic but that only makes me want this set to be bigger,” Solid Brix stated, agreeing with the sentiment regarding the empty rooms later in the review too. “I don’t normally say this about a lot of LEGO Star Wars sets, but I wish this set was priced higher for a much bigger base.”

75365 Yavin 4 Rebel Base is launching on August 1 for £149.99 / $169.99 / €169.99, for context.

Don’t miss out on the minifigures

“For many LEGO Star Wars fans, the big draw for this set is the minifigures, with 12 in all,” admits The Brothers Brick and many reviews were quick to conclude that the minifigures are impressive with eight being exclusive to 75365 Yavin 4 Rebel Base.

“The option to display Luke without his medal is particularly enticing, as he appears frequently in comics set immediately after the Battle of Yavin, dressed in this attire,” notes Brickset. The torso might be useful for a Cal Kestis minifigure based on Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s alternate outfit too.

The value of these 12 minifigures is considered, but for many it’s not enough to justify the cost of the model. However, Solid Brix Studios took a moment to give some credit to the LEGO Group where it’s due, saying, “Gotta give props to the LEGO Group, 12 minifigures in an under $200 LEGO Star Wars set, that is very uncommon nowadays, unfortunately.”

Despite everything, it’s still too expensive

Ultimately, the price of £149.99 / $169.99 / €169.99 was too much for most of the reviewers and impressions were affected by the high price.

“At least for the AFOL community, a big attraction for this set will be the minifigures but even then at $170 for just over 1,000 pieces, this set is a really hard sell,” explained TheBrickWiz.

However, it’s not as if you shouldn’t purchase the model at some point, but some reviewers advised that a sale of some kind would go a long way in furthering the value of 75365 Yavin 4 Rebel Base.

“I do think this is a set worth picking up at some point, I don’t think this is something you need to get on August 1. If you can wait for it to drop in price, maybe to $150, $140 – that’s the sweet spot to pick this bad boy up,” proposed Solid Brix Studios.
