Fortnite players can now design and build their own LEGO Islands

The latest Fortnite update brings the ability to create your own LEGO Islands, play Prop Hunt, learn spinjitzu, and care for an adorable cat.

Following on from rumours reported at the end of last month, the LEGO Group and Epic Games have now confirmed in an announcement at the 2024 Game Developers’ Conference (GDC) that Fortnite players can now design their own LEGO Islands within Fortnite using digital LEGO elements. This opens up the building possibilities still further for gamers, with LEGO elements, LEGO Styles and other LEGO Brand assets now available in Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) and Fortnite Creative for creator use. There are also four template options available to get you started.

Even more excitingly, published Fortnite creators who choose to publish their own LEGO Islands and are part of the Fortnite Island Creator Program can be eligible for payouts from their creations. While this likely won’t be enough money to quit your day job, it’s a fun way to turn gaming and LEGO building into a semi-profitable hobby.

What’s more, the LEGO Group itself has also built and published three more LEGO Islands, also launched on stage at the GDC, joining LEGO Raft Survival and LEGO Obby Fun after their launch in February. The first of these is called LEGO Prop Hunt, inspired by the popular hide-and-seek-style game mode that players can explore in a colourful shopping centre.

Next up is LEGO Battle Arena, which allows Fortnite players to become the next Spinjitzu master. The game mode involves enrolling in special training at the LEGO NINJAGO Dojo with Lloyd and the Masters of Spinjitzu, where you can compete against other trainees and hone your digital skills.

Last but not least, there’s also LEGO Cat Island Adventure, a game centred around meeting and nurturing your relationship with a friendly cat on an island. Just like any pet owner will know, you need to complete a series of tasks to keep your cat happy. There also appears to be the inclusion of real-life LEGO sets in this game, such as 41757 Botanical Garden, as pictured below.

“Today’s announcement is a hugely important step in us democratising creativity and putting the power of the LEGO brand into creators’ hands like never before,” said Kari Vinther Nielsen, Head of Play & Creator Growth at LEGO GAME. “We want kids and families to be able to enjoy a whole host of fun and engaging play experiences within Fortnite, and the potential this news offers for creators is incredibly exciting. We can’t wait to see what everyone builds and how much the community enjoys the creations.”

The collaboration between the LEGO Group and Epic Games isn’t slowing down anytime soon, with the promise of several more LEGO-themed experiences coming to Fortnite this year ‘and beyond’.

Player-built LEGO Islands will be available to be played solo or in multiplayer groups. It’s worth noting that there are some age-restricted controls in place, with all published LEGO Islands needing to have an ESRB rating of E10+ to be accessible to players in the US and a PEGI rating of 7 to be accessible to players in most of Europe. All LEGO Islands must also utilise Epic Games’ parental controls and safety features.
