LEGO gets selfish for its latest Ideas gift-with-purchase contest

LEGO Ideas has launched a new contest to find a future gift-with-purchase, and this one’s all about treating yo’ self.

November 11 is known around the world (or in some circles around the world, anyway) as Singles Day, because 11/11 is a lot of ones. Tenuous? Maybe. A reason to release a new LEGO Ideas set? Apparently. The latest contest from the crowdsourcing platform tasks fans with building a set that represents Singles Day, which it heralds as an opportunity for single people to ‘treat themselves and celebrate their independence’.

“If you could do anything for yourself, what would that look like in bricks?” the contest page asks, before offering examples such as hiking, baking and exploring new places. The eventual winner of the contest will have the opportunity to see their model transformed into a future gift-with-purchase, following in the footsteps of products like 40533 Cosmic Cardboard Adventures and 40487 Sailboat Adventure.

The grand prize winner will also receive copies of 21340 Tales of The Space Age, 21338 A-Frame Cabin, 21337 Table Football and 21335 Motorised Lighthouse, while five runners-up will receive 21340 Tales of The Space Age and 21334 Jazz Quartet. Submissions are open from now until June 27 at 11am UK time, though the LEGO Ideas team recommends getting your entry in at least three to five days before the deadline.

Once the entry window closes, the judges will select 15 models to progress to the fan vote, which kicks off on July 4. You’ll then have a week to vote for your favourite build, before the winner is announced no later than July 18.

Before you start building, note that there are a few caveats – the main one being that all models must be between 150 and 250 pieces (for a final GWP roughly similar in size and scope to previous LEGO Ideas freebies). Head over to the contest page to check out all the rules and requirements, and keep an eye on the entries as they come in.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.

In the U.S., November 11 is Veterans Day (and an actual Federal Holiday). Rather than indulge myself to celebrate an invented retail holiday, I’d rather take that day to thank people in my nation who made the selfLESS decision to defend it for us all.

I must have missed a memo. Isn’t 11/11 already the armistice where we celebrate people not killing each other anymore, and the sacrifices of those who died to protect everyone else? Making it “singles day” and all about yourself is beyond insulting.
