Collecting every LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts portrait is a thankless task

You’ll need more than a little luck if you’re hoping to collect all of the Hogwarts portraits included in the latest LEGO Harry Potter sets.

Back in 2021 the LEGO Harry Potter theme introduced Collectible Wizard Cards, with 16 different printed 2×2 tiles randomly spread throughout six 20th anniversary sets. Now the LEGO Group is at it again, with fans being offered a selection of what are being pitched as Hogwarts portraits in the recently released March line-up of models.

We got our first look at the gold-coloured portraits back in January, thanks to a listing on a Dutch retailer’s website. In total there are 14 of the printed flat angled tiles to collect, with each one featuring the image of a famous character from the Wizarding World. From what we can tell so far, the full line-up of magical minifigures on the portraits are as follows (from left to right):

  1. Rowena Ravenclaw
  2. Unknown Sleeping Wizard
  3. Sir Cadogan
  4. Unknown Sleeping Witch
  5. Godric Gryffindor
  6. Maud Montague
  7. Edessa Sakndenberg
  8. Helga Hufflepuff
  9. Damara Dodderidge
  10. Jocunda Sykes
  11. Elizabeth Burke
  12. Ivan The Terrible
  13. Basil Fronsac
  14. Salazar Slytherin

As with the Collectible Wizard Cards. the Hogwarts portraits have also been randomly inserted into a handful of new LEGO Harry Potter sets, with one each in 76430 Hogwarts Castle Owlery and 76426 Hogwarts Castle Boathouse, plus two included in 76428 Hagrid’s Hut: An Unexpected Visit.

The issue here is that images of the boxes and sets only show a question mark in place of whichever Hogwarts portraits may be awaiting inside. It’s only after you’ve opened your latest LEGO Harry Potter acquisition that you’ll find out which of the collectibles you’ve actually obtained.

So even if fans pick up all three of the LEGO Harry Potter models (above) that were released in March, there’s still no way to complete the full collection of 14 Hogwarts portraits without buying multiple versions of each build. In fact, you’re more likely to pick up multiples of the same tiles, making amassing all of them an even more frustrating and thankless task.

The smart money might be on additional Hogwarts portrait tiles being packed into some of the upcoming rumoured LEGO Harry Potter sets potentially on the way in 2024, but that’s just pure speculation on our part. The LEGO Group has yet to confirm the existence of those builds to date, so do take any such information regarding those models with a pinch of salt for now.

Keep calm. Take a deep breath. Wait for the inevitable polybag.
