LEGO Icons 10312 Jazz Club could have been a different model altogether

The latest upcoming addition to the LEGO Modular Buildings Collection, 10312 Jazz Club, was almost a completely different model.

The upcoming 10312 Jazz Club will be the 18th addition to the LEGO Modular Buildings Collection, with the 2,899-piece set due to launch on January 1, 2023. The three-storey construction actually includes two buildings in one – a jazz club and a pizzeria – plus eight unique minifigures to populate the model.

However, in an interview with Brickset, the designer of 10312 Jazz Club has revealed that the set went through a number of development stages and was almost an entirely different build. Andserson Ward Grubb was asked about rumours that the LEGO Icons set was going to be some sort of music venue, based on an poster featured on the side of 10297 Boutique Hotel.

“Actually, it didn’t start out as a jazz club,” said Andserson, “although a music hall was something we talked about doing.”

The designer goes on to explain another potential option that was considered for the model and the challenges that would have faced.

“When I started doing some sketches for it,” he said, “we were exploring things like a shopping street, where the layout might have been completely different with an aisle down the middle.”

“That wasn’t really working for us, partly because we were trying to fit too many things into a space and physically getting your hands into one building, fitting in a street and a second building was a little too much. So we came back and asked what else could we do? What about that other idea, something related to music or live entertainment venue?”

An earlier report also stated that 10312 Jazz Club may have even been a newspaper office at one point. However, with 76178 Daily Bugle still available and a direct competitor to the proposed version of the Icons model, this idea was ultimately dropped.

10312 Jazz Club is set to be released on LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores on January 1, 2023 and will be priced at £199.99 / $229.99 / €229.99.
