LEGO Monkie Kid 80036 The City of Lanterns features lots of vintage sets

The largest LEGO Monkie Kid 2022 set depicts a multi-storey city with a LEGO store that stocks lots of vintage models, and one in-theme build.

LEGO Monkie Kid 80036 The City of Lanterns is releasing on January 1, 2022, with a huge model depicting the titular city with shops, hotels and restaurants for minifigures to visit. One of these is a LEGO store complete with a brick-built dragon mascot twisting through the structure.

However, behind the door of this LEGO location are eight real-life models, most of which are referencing creations from the LEGO Group’s back catalogue including Adventurers and Paradisa.

6416 Poolside Paradise

On the top shelf is the iconic pink box for LEGO Paradisa, with the colour being a huge part of the theme. The set features in The City of Lanterns is 6416 Poolside Paradise, evident by the dome on the second floor and palm tree.

5988 The Temple of Anubis

An Adventurers model is also in stock at the brick-based shop with 5988 The Temple of Anubis. The sticker features the large temple and side builds such as the balloon, truck and another palm tree.

497 Galaxy Explorer

As a theme that the LEGO Group continues to return to, the LEGO Monkie Kid 2022 sets reference Classic Space not once, but twice in the upcoming creations. One of these is in 80036 The City of Lanterns with 497 Galaxy Explorer being available for purchase for minifigures.

80107 Spring Lantern Festival

It’s not just older sets in stock at the Monkie Kid LEGO store with the 2021 Chinese New Year model 80107 Spring Lantern Festival also on a shelf. The signature red curved box design and grey shape make it clear that the sticker is an Easter Egg to the cultural creation.

375 Castle

LEGO Castle is next with another shelf featuring 375 Castle. This one will be easy to spot thanks to the iconic yellow colour of the walls and blue sky, as well as the yellow banner stretching across the box art.

80012 Monkey King Warrior Mech

Included in one of the store displays and without a box is 80012 Monkey King Warrior Mech, which also features on our Top 20 LEGO sets list. The buildable figure and staff can be found on the second shelf up in the white case.

6285 Black Seas Barracuda

Following the retirement of 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay by 2022, the crew of 6285 Black Seas Barracuda will still have somewhere to go thanks to 80036 The City of Lanterns as the build is still in stock in the miniature shop.

One other stickered design features in the LEGO store, though it’s not clear if this is representing a set or a display, with the three windows on the white brick possibly featuring a mini design for the models in 80030 Monkie Kid’s Staff Creations.
