LEGO takes down controversial AI-generated NINJAGO quiz

The LEGO Group has taken down the LEGO NINJAGO quiz featuring AI-generated images that caused controversy within the community.

After criticism was levelled at the LEGO Group both publicly on social media and from those on the LEGO Ambassador Network, the company has now removed the LEGO NINJAGO quiz entirely and made an official statement on the matter. Clicking through to the link results in a 404 error that occurs when a webpage has been removed entirely.

This comes after more people began to express displeasure about the use of AI-generated images in the quiz. Instead of the digital versions of minifigures and LEGO elements that we’re used to in LEGO imagery, the pictures of NINJAGO characters seemed to be clearly created by AI, with misshapen hands, overly stylised effects, and even imagery from outside of the NINJAGO franchise (a headband that looks to be from Naruto).

On our own Instagram post reporting on the AI images, people echoed the initial disappointment that the LEGO Group had used AI tools for image creation. One Instagram user wrote: “AI is not art”, while another summed it up with a simple: “Booooo! Hissssss!”

The controversy around AI-generated artwork has been around virtually since it first entered the mainstream, with fears of AI tools stealing ideas and style from human artists through the machine-learning process and of artists losing their jobs as companies switch to using AI for creative purposes.
