Luigi will bring multiplayer to LEGO Super Mario after all

It looks like Luigi will be bringing multiplayer to LEGO Super Mario after all – at least according to the box art for 71387 Adventures with Luigi Starter Course.

Until now, the buildable video game theme has been an entirely isolated experience (unless you count the simplistic and limited opportunities offered by a pass-and-play solution). That’s all about to change with 71387 Adventures with Luigi Starter Course, however, which brings the green-clad plumber to the world of LEGO Super Mario for the first time.

While the LEGO Group hasn’t been shouting loud and proud about what exactly Luigi will bring to the table (beyond a brief glimpse of the unique interactions offered through his new friends and foes), the packaging for the digital figure’s starter pack does give us a few clues.

For instance: it looks like we’re finally about to see some kind of multiplayer experience, because the side of the box suggests Mario and Luigi can ‘team up for new adventures’. More explicitly, an image of the Mario Bros. with a Bluetooth icon indicates that you can connect both digital figures to play with them together, should you also own 71360 Adventures with Mario Starter Course.

That’s basically what we’ve all been asking for in the LEGO Super Mario theme since it first launched last summer. But how exactly this multiplayer aspect will work remains to be seen – are we looking at just a slightly more involved form of pass and play that allows the plumbers to recognise and talk to each other, or does the LEGO Group have a deeper co-operative and/or competitive experience in the works?

We’ll find out for sure when we get our hands on 71387 Adventures with Luigi Starter Course in August, but hopefully the LEGO Super Mario team sheds a little more light on the situation before then. We’ll keep you posted.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
