Scanning LEGO instructions for LEGO Insiders points is a full-time job

You can now scan LEGO instructions for LEGO Insiders points, but earning enough for a substantial discount is evidently a full-time job.

An enthusiastic Reddit user has spent hours scanning around 750 instruction manuals from just as many sets, all to earn $35 off a future LEGO purchase. LEGO Insiders can now scan QR codes on the front page of instruction booklets to earn 20 points, no matter the size of the set.

This feature came as part of a rebranding of the LEGO VIP program and there has been some debate as to whether or not the flat rate of 20 points is worth the time it takes to scan the code. For this user, it took around five hours to scan everything. Note that the pictures provided on Reddit include booklets without a compatible code.

A comment from ElectricMayham reveals that the five hours of work it took to scan the codes for enough points for a $35 discount is equal to around $7 an hour, just below minimum wage in the US but that comes with tax while the LEGO.com discount does not. It turns out that this new feature is essentially a full-time job for those with hundreds or thousands of booklets to scan.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
