Wild eBay auction of the day: six LEGO posters for $1,000

Got money to burn and want a piece of modern LEGO history? One ambitious seller is asking nearly $1,000 for a set of six LEGO VIDIYO posters on eBay.

Now, you might be wondering what’s so special about these posters to warrant a nearly four-figure asking price. According to the seller, it’s that five of them are each one of only 500 produced, while the sixth is one of only 2,000. So they’re ‘quite rare’ (in their words). But are they $1,000 rare? That’s for the free market to decide… and so far, the free market has decided that no, they are not.

The five LEGO VIDIYO concert posters were originally available in the Insiders Rewards Centre (then VIP Rewards Centre) in 2021, at a cost of 500 points each. The sixth print – dubbed the TROPICON Wardrobe poster – was available for just 250 points. That’s a total cost of 2,750 points, or just over $20 in discount vouchers. If these posters fetch their $966.11 asking price, the seller will have made a profit of roughly 4,730%.

They’ll need to find someone willing to pay that price first, though. And given that LEGO VIDIYO was not what you’d call the LEGO Group’s most successful theme – the company paused development a few months after the initial launch, then canned the concept altogether in early 2022 – it’s hard to imagine there are collectors out there clamouring for these particular posters. Especially given there were originally six concert posters (and the wardrobe print), so this technically isn’t a full set.

A quick search through eBay’s sold listings doesn’t turn up any other examples of recent sales of these posters, making it difficult to pin down what might constitute a realistic price for these VIP rewards. And they appear to be the only examples currently available on the secondary marketplace – so maybe the seller really is on to something rare here after all… even if it’s not necessarily $1,000 rare.

LEGO VIDIYO may have gone the way of the dodo, but its legacy lives on in other sets – including the newly-revealed 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
