LEGO brick appears in TIME magazine’s 100 Best Inventions of 2021
The upcoming LEGO brick made from recycled plastic bottles has made it into TIME magazine’s list of the 100 Best Inventions of 2021.
Each year, TIME magazine shines a spotlight on the inventions that change the world we live in. The results range from medical miracles and sophisticated robots to scientific breakthroughs and the latest fashion trends.
The 100 Best Inventions of 2021 has now been revealed and includes a number of noteworthy entries including a sustainable breakthrough from the LEGO Group. In the summer the first LEGO brick made from recycled plastic was announced. As part of the LEGO Group’s roadmap to produce products made from sustainable materials, the LEGO brick uses PET from discarded bottles.
“The Danish toy giant hopes to integrate the recycled blocks into LEGO sets in the next 18 to 24 months,” said TIME’s Rebecca Katzman. “The impact could be considerable: the company uses some 100,000 metric tons of plastic resin in its products each year.”
The prototype 2×4 LEGO brick is the first and only element to meet the company’s strict safety and quality standards. A team of over 150 people spent three years testing more than 250 kinds of PET material to find a suitable and sustainable solution. The company is currently half-way through a three-year plan to invest $400 million to meet that ambitious target, which also includes making its packaging entirely sustainable by 2025.
