Everything you need to know about LEGO Fortnite

Long rumoured and now almost here, LEGO and Fortnite are officially teaming up – so here’s everything you need to know ahead of its launch.

While the LEGO Group might dominate play in the real world, Fortnite arguably does the same in the digital world. The online battle royale game has 231 million monthly active users as of 2023, making it the third most-played game of the year, beaten out only by Minecraft at number one and League of Legends at number two.

It’s no surprise then that the confirmation that the LEGO Group was teaming up with Fortnite was received with huge excitement. Both the LEGO Group and Fortnite have begun promoting the launch of the collaboration, coming later this week, so we’ve gathered together everything you need to know about the in-game partnership in one handy place.

LEGO Fortnite’s marketing broke the internet

There’s no denying that the confirmation of the launch has gone down well with both LEGO and Fortnite fans, as well as a healthy amount of people outside of both fandoms. That’s because the marketing campaign has been huge and unavoidable, even going so far as to illuminate the new-yet-already-iconic Las Vegas Sphere, as shown in the video above.

The partnership between the LEGO Group and Fortnite was officially announced during Epic Games’ Big Bang event on December 2, headlined by none other than Eminem (or a virtual version of the rapper at least). The event marked the end of Chapter 4 and lined up what is to come in Chapter 5. Namely, it set up an apocalyptic dimension-hopping era for the game, including a preview of the LEGO section of the game. This includes extensive crafting systems (combining the creative elements of both LEGO and Fortnite) and unique combat options against what appear to be LEGO-fied NPC enemies.

Playable LEGO content in Fortnite

A few days on from the Big Bang event, we now know more details about what exactly to expect from the actual LEGO gameplay in Fortnite. There will be over 1,200 LEGO minifigure styles in Fortnite, meaning you can play the battle royale game looking like a LEGO minifigure version of many familiar Fortnite figures. There are estimated to be a total of 1,600 Outfits in Fortnite in total, so Epic Games is well on its way to having an entire library of LEGO styles.

It’s worth noting that the Fortnite team have clarified on X (formerly Twitter) that some styles will be more detailed than others, with 317 available already in detail and “many many more” being added every month until the full line-up is equally detailed. In addition, Epic Games clarified that some IP’s skins won’t receive a LEGO style – implying that some still will. Fortnite already has Star Wars and Marvel styles, for example, that theoretically could be quite easily converted to minifigures in-game, seeing as we already have LEGO-fied versions of many characters in the bank from LEGO Star Wars and Marvel sets.

Further details about what exactly to expect from the game are low on the ground, but more is promised to come on the collaboration’s launch date on December 7. There are some conclusions to be drawn from the LEGO Group’s official FAQ, with the company answering questions cryptically. For example, there are sure to be some surprises in store, as the LEGO Group writes “be prepared for something a little different than what you’re used to”.

Under the question of whether LEGO Fortnite will be multiplayer, it says “although all will be revealed on December 7 when the game is launched, we’d say this would be a pretty good guess…”, so we can safely say that, like regular Fortnite, there will be co-op play elements involved.

Described as “the ultimate survival crafting adventure”, LEGO Fortnite is expected to lean into the existing crafting and building features of the game. This aligns perfectly with the LEGO Group’s association with building, so there’s potential to see elements of LEGO building enter the world of Fortnite, similar to how characters in LEGO Star Wars games can build and repair weapons and ships using digital studs. However, we’ll need to wait until December 7 to know for sure.

How to get involved with LEGO Fortnite

Launching on December 7, LEGO Fortnite will be available to play on all devices that you can already play Fortnite on (PS5, PS4/4 Pro, Xbox Series X/S/One/One X/One S, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Android). However, there are already a few ways you can get involved in the partnership ahead of the official launch.

For example, you can get prepared to unlock a special Explorer Emilie Fortnite Outfit on December 7 by linking your Epic Games and LEGO accounts. The skin is free for LEGO Insiders, so if you aren’t already a member of the LEGO Group’s membership, now would be a good time to sign up. Then you just need to head to epicgames.com/login and click on the LEGO logo to link your two accounts.

You can also browse through your Fortnite Locker to see which Outfits already have a LEGO Style. You can do so by checking the Outfit’s detail page when browsing the Shop or your Locker. Epic Games has stated that new LEGO Styles will be added to Fortnite often and to keep checking back to see if a higher detailed LEGO Style has been added.
