First X-Men ’97 clip offers context for LEGO Marvel minifigure

The first clip for Marvel Animation’s X-Men ’97 has been shared, offering context for a unique accessory in LEGO 71039 Marvel Series 2.

Ahead of its debut on Disney+ on March 20, a clip from the animated series has been revealed. It showcases the team as they return to screens and how the new 2D and 3D animation styles are being combined in a seamless way.

The clip in question features the X-Men facing off against damaged Sentinels, including Beast, Rogue, Cyclops, Gambit, Bishop, Morph and Wolverine. Most of these characters have new minifigures thanks to recent sets including 76281 X-Men X-Jet and 71039 Marvel Series 2.

Wolverine in 71039 Marvel Series 2 may specifically relate to this scene thanks to the inclusion of a damaged sentinel head as an accessory. Given Wolverine’s personality, it may be that the accessory is not based on this scene though it would be an interesting coincidence given that this is the first damaged sentinel head piece and only the second based on the robots.

We’ll have to see how accurate the rest of the X-Men ’97 sets are to the series though judging by the minifigure designs in 76281 X-Men X-Jet, it may be more accurate than previously expected. The character’s classic appearances all match up nearly exactly with that of the minifigures, only changing proportions to suit the minifigure shape.

We’re still missing minifigures of Gambit, Morph, Bishop and more X-Men that appear frequently in marketing material, though no further X-Men ’97 sets have been confirmed at the time of writing.

X-Men ’97 starts streaming next week on March 20 and the animation seems to call back to the original series while embracing new technology to create more dynamic action scenes. This clip comes after the series creator was reported to have been fired earlier this week.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
