Latest LEGO Ideas 10K project dives deep into Disney history

The LEGO Disney line-up could one day dive deep into the company’s history thanks to the latest LEGO Ideas 10K project, which offers a unique spin on an obscure animated series.

Or a unique TaleSpin, if you prefer, because the 1990 TV show is the inspiration behind Delusion Brick’s fourth LEGO Ideas project to reach 10,000 votes. Like their Imperial Fortress, Karate Kid and Spartan Helmet projects before it, TaleSpin Seaduck meeting Seagull will now progress to the review stage of the crowdsourcing process, during which the LEGO Group will decide whether to turn it into an official product.

The 2,975-piece digital build is constructed on a base reminiscent of 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay, and depicts a plane crash-landing on an unmapped island. This is the setup for TaleSpin (a play on tailspin, the term for an airplane spiralling towards a crash), which originally aired on the Disney Channel from 1990 to 1991 – and has since passed into the annals of obscure animation history.

Like several other shows produced around the same time, TaleSpin features characters that first debuted in other stories – in this case, Baloo the Bear, Louie the orangutan, and Shere Khan the tiger from 1967’s The Jungle Book. Delusion Brick’s concept includes Baloo, the pilot of the crashed plane – which belongs to delivery company Higher for Hire – along with Kit Cloudkicker, Rebecca Cunningham and Wildcat.

If those names mean nothing to you, it might be time to go check out TaleSpin. IGN has ranked it among the 100 greatest animated TV shows, and it’s clearly resonated with the LEGO Ideas userbase, as comments on the project page speak to the nostalgia evoked by the build. Others unfamiliar with TaleSpin have also voted for the project on the strength of its build alone, which has helped propel it to 10,000 votes within six months.

TaleSpin Seaduck meeting Seagull now joins 15 other projects in the second 2023 review. We’ll find out the results of this review in early 2024.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
