The LEGO Group loves its mechs, but does this character need one?

These days, just about every superhero in the LEGO universe has a mech, but while they’re probably useful, we don’t think this guy needs one.

Since that door slid up, all the way back in 1986, and Ripley confronted the Alien Queen with the line “Get away from her, you <unpleasant word>”, mechs have been cool. They were almost certainly a staple of Japanese anime before that, but Sigourney Weaver and her powerlifter put them right into western consciousness.

Of late, the LEGO Group have really gone to town on mechs, with everyone from Batman to Wolverine getting their own exoskeleton to enhance their clobbering power. In the world of Ninjago, you’re nobody unless you’ve got at least one giant robo-suit to jump into. We’ve been keeping an eye on the LEGO sets rumoured to be waiting for us next year and one of the places we check is Stonewars. And looking at the list of Marvel sets that they’ve speculated about, one caught our eye.

Set 76241, supposedly for release on January 1, consisting of 138 pieces and costing €14.99 is titled ‘Hulk mech’. Now we don’t know about you, but for us, the big green guy probably doesn’t need any help in the ‘smashing things up’ department.

Not being as au fait with Hulk lore as we might be, be did a bit of research on just how powerful the Hulk is, and apparently the general consensus is ‘his power is unlimited’. It seems the angrier he gets, the stronger, faster and ‘hulkier’ he gets. According to Collider.com, ‘This dude’s destroyed meteors the size of Earth with his fists.’ That doesn’t sound like someone who needs a mech to us.

Having said that, we’re fairly confident that the equation ‘Superhero X is cool, but Superhero X plus mech is cooler’ is pretty solid, so even if Dr Banner’s grumpy alter ego doesn’t technically need one, he’s probably thinking ‘That looks fun’. Would you turn down your own personal mech?  ‘Course not!

Whatever the Hulk thinks of it, he, like us, is just going to have to wait and see whether it becomes reality as, at present, it’s nothing more than speculation.
