LEGO Star Wars battle pack minifigure took ‘a lot of convincing’ to include

One of the minifigures in this year’s brand new LEGO Star Wars battle pack took ‘a lot of convincing’ to include in the set, reveals the model’s designer.

January saw the return of dual-faction LEGO Star Wars battle packs in full force with 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack, a homage to the very first army builders from 2007 that pits the Republic against the Separatists. According to lead set designer Nathan Clark, that direction was inspired by 2024 marking the 25th anniversary of LEGO Star Wars.

“I wanted to pay homage to one of the pillars of the theme,” Nathan, who left the LEGO Group in 2023, wrote on Brickset. “I remember getting the first two battle packs 7654 Droids Battle Pack and 7655 Clone Troopers Battle Pack as a kid and how much time I spent playing with them. I wanted to create a similar play experience for the kids of today that the older fans would also appreciate. How better to inspire play then to have a whole battle in a single box!”

Bundling in three standard Phase II Clone Troopers, a Coruscant Guard Trooper, three Super Battle Droids – back on shelves after nine years – and two regular Battle Droids, 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack is the result of a single goal from Nathan: include as many minifigures and as much value as possible in a single LEGO Star Wars set.

The variety in Clone Troopers acts as another nod to 2007’s 7655 Clone Troopers Battle Pack, which includes two plain Clone Troopers, one yellow-tinted 327th Star Corps Trooper and one red-tinted Shock Trooper. But the return of the Coruscant Guard Trooper from last September’s 75354 Coruscant Guard Gunship wasn’t always on the cards.

“My favourite part of this model is the fact I was able to include a Shock Trooper,” Nathan added. “It took a lot of convincing. I know many will have wanted four regular troopers but as a kid who had that original battle pack and not many other Star Wars sets, I used my Shock Trooper as my clone commander. I also didn’t want the Shock Trooper in 75354 to be stuck behind a high pay barrier like the last ones in 75046.”

The previous Phase II Shock Troopers were available exclusively in 2014’s 75046 Coruscant Police Gunship, and now command an average of £55 new and £41 used apiece on BrickLink. The new version, by contrast, can be bought for as little as £3 to £4 new on the aftermarket, and that’s all thanks to its inclusion in 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack – and Nathan’s persistence in getting it into the mix.

75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack is available now at LEGO.com, in LEGO Stores and through third-party retailers. Check out our review of the battle pack here.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
