New LEGO Technic set spells certain doom for multiple LEGO Ideas projects

The newly-revealed LEGO Technic 42156 Peugeot 9X8 24H Le Mans Hybrid Hypercar likely spells certain doom for multiple LEGO Ideas projects – including one rapidly gaining momentum.

LEGO Ideas user Brick_A_Brac submitted their 1,300-piece recreation of the Peugeot 9X8 Hypercar to the crowdsourcing platform on March 8, and the model has already racked up nearly 3,000 votes. Built predominantly with System bricks, the set captures all the same sleek curves, real-world decals and striking lime green highlights as the LEGO Group’s official Technic set.

Did we say official set? Yep: the LEGO Group has today unveiled 42156 Peugeot 9X8 24H Le Mans Hybrid Hypercar, which zooms on to store shelves on May 1 for £169.99 / $199.99 / €199.99. Designed with Technic elements, the hypercar joins a growing list of 1:10-scale vehicles like 42096 Porsche 911 RSR and 42125 Ferrari 488 GTE AF CORSE #51.

And it surely spells the end of the journey for not only Brick_A_Brac’s project, but a number of other Ideas submissions anchored around Peugeot’s latest hypercar, which was built for the 24 Hours of Le Mans championships. It seems incredibly unlikely that the LEGO Group would green-light a System version of an existing Technic set, after all – especially at a similar scale.

It’ll probably prove a sticking point not only for Brick_A_Brac’s 26-stud-wide 9X8, but also for Morten8920’s slightly smaller System interpretation of the same vehicle – which currently sits at 563 supporters – and Dinos_05’s Speed Champions-esque 200-piece model. That one was submitted back in August 2022 and has only amassed 207 votes, so of the three projects, it seems like the biggest has the best potential of actually reaching the magic 10,000 votes to progress to the review stage.

Even if the 9X8 passes that threshold, though, the chances of it getting approved seem pretty much zero now. That’s bad news for Peugeot fans who prefer System sets, and will have to console themselves with the Technic-led 42156 Peugeot 9X8 24H Le Mans Hybrid Hypercar – and arguably worse news for the designers who’ve put the time and effort into pitching these projects on LEGO Ideas.

But that’s always the risk with submitting proposals to the crowdsourcing platform: you never know what the LEGO Group already has up its sleeve…

42156 Peugeot 9X8 24H Le Mans Hybrid Hypercar launches May 1 for £169.99 / $199.99 / €199.99.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
