LEGO Minecraft 21256 The Frog House review

The largest 2024 LEGO Minecraft set 21256 Frog House is the ultimate model for frog enthusiasts, but it’s limited by its price and niche subject matter.

Spend enough time online and you’ll know the internet fame that the Minecraft frog has gained since its reveal in 2021, becoming the subject of memes and a catchy video. Added to the game in June 2022, the blocky amphibians are an acquired taste, but one to which this large LEGO Minecraft set caters superbly. As a result, however, it will likely struggle to find an audience outside of that demographic.

21256 The Frog House may not be the best of the LEGO Minecraft 2024 sets, but through an interesting design, this unique take on the mob houses (buildings based on the creatures in Minecraft) still has merit – especially for amphibian enthusiasts.

LEGO Minecraft 21256 The Frog House launches on January 1, 2024, for £49.99 / $54.99 / €54.99. Two of the theme’s 2024 sets are available now in the US, a month before other regions, in 21252 The Armory and 21253 The Animal Sanctuary.

LEGO Minecraft sets have never been creatively named and that doesn’t change in 21256 The Frog House, as the vast majority of the 400 pieces in this set go towards the brown abode. The most immediately noticeable feature is the giant opening on the front of the house, with nothing but a fence and gate stopping hostile mobs from entering or shooting projectiles into the home. This design choice makes the house feel explicitly open and showcases its unfortunately hollow nature.

Odd defences aside, 21256 The Frog House‘s main model looks similar enough to the Minecraft creature of the same name and three different frogs are included for comparison, including one entirely exclusive variant.

Before delving into the interior, the environment surrounding the home appears to be based on a mangrove swamp judging by the box art. Unfortunately, no such mangrove trees are included, which could have helped boost both the piece count and the perceived size of the exterior.

Without any such tree, the exterior space around the home is too minuscule with barely enough room to pose minifigures. A small farm is provided that can slot neatly next to the frog house. However, this section is similarly small and it can’t help but seem like an afterthought. Thankfully, the house itself is the focus of the set and is almost adequate enough to overcome the shortcomings of the outside space.

While there’s not an abundance of space outside the house, the interior has plenty of room for better and for worse. All the furnishings are kept around the edge of the house by design and include a bed, table, chest, furnace and crafting table. This leaves a big space in the middle, as is inevitable with a LEGO Minecraft frog recreation of this size and it makes the whole thing hollow. That is exemplified by the massive open space at the front of the building.

Ultimately, with just one minifigure to live in it, the house feels a bit bare and some kind of decoration in the centre would have been a major upgrade. You could always resolve it for yourself by moving the furniture around, but this is where the instructions tell you to put everything, so you’ll need to go off-piste. But this is LEGO! So no problems there.

Just as the front of the house is open, there’s a space at the back too. While this matches with the design at the front, this open-ended concept isn’t the most visually attractive and only serves to exaggerate the hollow nature of the model. Still, it’s hard to deny that the house looks like a frog from Minecraft as intended.

A small boat build is included too and there’s nothing that sets it apart from other LEGO Minecraft boats. It continues to be a great and tactile design that adds to the playability of 21256 The Frog House.

There are three minifigures in 21256 The Frog House, including an exclusive player minifigure, a standard Zombie and the more uncommon Drowned with a trident. These three minifigures are good picks and we’re enjoying the consistent stream of player minifigures with exclusive designs in the different LEGO Minecraft sets. We can only hope this trend continues for as long as the theme does.

Another player minifigure to share the sizable house would have been nice, but the Zombie does help to drive conflict within the model, so it makes sense from a play perspective.

Aside from the standard minifigures, the other mobs included in this LEGO Minecraft set include the adorable and rare Slime. The mob still appears in its smallest stage, with the larger variant last featured in 2017’s 21137 The Mountain Cave. While we wait for more Slime variety, another option to pick up a LEGO Minecraft Slime is all too welcome.

However, the highlight of 21256 The Frog House is undoubtedly the three frogs, including one that matches the colour scheme of the model. It wouldn’t be the ultimate LEGO Minecraft frog set without the most LEGO Minecraft frogs of any build ever. The green variant is currently exclusive to 21256 The Frog House, too.

With 400 pieces including two larger base elements, £49.99 / $54.99 / €54.99 for 21256 The Frog House is just a bit too much. The open design of the abode doesn’t help to increase the sense of value in the model either.

The lacklustre exterior affects the perceived value just as much and it would be great to see either more exterior or a proper wall to complete the frog building. Unless you’re a huge Minecraft frog fan, maybe wait for a sale on this set.

— LEGO Minecraft 21256 The Frog House pros and cons —

While putting 21256 The Frog House together, it became clear that the intended audience for the set is those who have already collected many of the mob houses, or Minecraft frog enthusiasts specifically. For these groups, 21256 The Frog House will provide a satisfying experience to build and a great finished product.

Outside of those niches, there’s not enough of Minecraft’s natural landscape or the expected volume of bricks in this LEGO set. A slight expansion to the exterior would have gone a long way and there appears to be enough room left in the piece count for it, even counting the two larger base pieces.

21256 The Frog House is focused almost wholly on the house itself and it’s a mostly pleasing build and one that will be a lot more tempting when it’s on sale. This is largely thanks to its open design that leaves something to be desired – both inside and out, unfortunately. Still, there’s no denying whatsoever that this is the ultimate LEGO Minecraft frog set and it will likely hold that title for eternity.

— Alternatives to LEGO Minecraft 21256 The Frog House —

There are quite a few decent alternatives to 21256 The Frog House. From the 2024 selection, 21254 The Turtle Beach House is an interesting option with a focus on turtles instead of frogs but with similar content for a better price.

Those looking for another swamp model will be satisfied with 21240 The Swamp Adventure – one of the smallest LEGO Minecraft sets but still including a Slime and a frog. Otherwise, mob house collectors might want to look towards 21245 The Panda Haven instead.
