LEGO Star Wars 75376 Tantive IV review

LEGO Star Wars 75376 Tantive IV has the toughest sell of the midi-scale Starship Collection, but does a good job delivering all that it can.

75376 Tantive IV is one of three midi-scale ships to arrive in March 2024, but sits awkwardly in the middle and faces perhaps the toughest task to convince LEGO Star Wars fans of its value.

— LEGO Star Wars 75376 Tantive IV build —

LEGO Star Wars 75376 Tantive IV comes in at the mid-range of the midi-scale Starship Collection sets launching this March – more expensive and bigger than 75377 Invisible Hand, but cheaper than 75375 Millennium Falcon and almost a third fewer parts included. The challenge facing 75376 Tantive IV is in how poorly it compares to both of those sets. 75377 Invisible Hand has an important (but sometimes misleading) factor that the other two do not have on their side – novelty, as this is the first time we’ve been able to build that ship in LEGO form.

Meanwhile, while 75375 Millennium Falcon is by no means the first LEGO Star Wars set based on Han Solo’s iconic ride, it offers such a detailed, mini-UCS-style build of one of the franchise’s most popular and recognisable ships, and even though it is £5 more than 75376 Tantive IV, it includes almost 50% more parts.

Novelty and value are not on 75376 Tantive IV’s side, which immediately places it on the back benches. We’ve had LEGO Tantive IVs before, and this one is comparatively expensive.

That being said, and with it still sitting relevant to the wider consideration of this set, there are factors that do play into 75376 Tantive IV’s favour, including – as is the case for all three of these midi-scale Starship Collection sets – a thoroughly interesting and engrossing build experience. This thing is really fun to put together for anyone seasoned in LEGO, with some very clever and new ways to capture a lot of details true and accurate to the on-screen version of this ship.

It contributes to a greater appreciation for the final model as it stands on display, elevated by that black stand. The changes in angle across the long body are subtle but clever in how they have been achieved, whilst how part of the fuselage towards the back (both above and underside) is connected feels like an ‘in-the-know’ kind of secret that only you and the designers have discovered. What threatens to be repetitive in the build is not, and what could be dull or uninteresting to put together is instead either far more quickly constructed than you imagine, or just more enjoyable.

Once complete, 75376 Tantive IV does generally look good, albeit for not the most interesting ship from Star Wars (if we are all honest with ourselves), and it’s not perfect. It is perhaps the one model of the three Starship Collection sets to suffer one of the pitfalls of designing at midi-scale. This is a scale of design where proportions are a lot harder to keep accurate, where the thickness of a plate or the length of a bar could represent so much more distance or size than when used in a larger-scaled model. Whilst 75376 Tantive IV generally navigates this challenge very well, the head to the vessel does skew a little too small, in relation to the rest of the ship – if there are better pieces to use we can’t think of them, mind.

— LEGO Star Wars 75376 Tantive IV characters —

LEGO Star Wars 75376 Tantive IV doesn’t come with any minifigures, which does feel like a creative misstep, considering the value an exclusive tie-in character standing next to the model could add. A Captain Antilles with dual-moulded legs, perhaps.

— LEGO Star Wars 75376 Tantive IV price —

LEGO Star Wars 75376 Tantive IV falls down at this point – at £69.99 / $79.99 / €79.99 it is too expensive for what it is. It’s the least interesting, least novel of the three midi-scale Starship Collection sets. Likewise, it doesn’t deliver enough to justify being £23 more expensive than 75377 Invisible Hand and it certainly doesn’t feel like it’s just £5 less than the much superior 75375 Millennium Falcon. It’s a good set and one that is fun to put together, but the price should cause you to pause and perhaps wait for a competitive sale.

— LEGO Star Wars 75376 Tantive IV pros and cons —

LEGO Star Wars 75376 Tantive IV delivers an engaging and authentic build that recreates the first ship ever seen in Star Wars in a new way, and for a ship that you may or may not have previously built in LEGO. Whether you want a static mini-model of this particular vessel or not is a deeper consideration that does hold more weight, just as is the relatively poor value-for-money that 75376 Tantive IV offers in comparison with the other two midi-scale Starship Collection sets.

LEGO Star Wars 75376 Tantive IV is part of the Starship Collection of midi-scale ships releasing March 2024 and the best alternatives to it are the other two – 75377 Invisible Hand and 75375 Millennium Falcon. The Falcon in particular wins through for best build, whilst 75377 comes in by far the cheapest to buy.
