LEGO and Yu-Gi-Oh! collide in latest LEGO Ideas 10K project

A storage box is the latest LEGO Ideas project to reach the second 2023 review – but this isn’t any old storage box. It’s one specifically designed to hold Yu-Gi-Oh! cards…

Pitched as ‘a box to hold your most treasured cards’, Ideas user Zero Helix’s Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Box: Dark Magician vs Blue-Eyes White Dragon adapts the anime’s striking gold sarcophagus and tops it with ‘the franchise’s two most iconic monsters’. Coming in at 791 pieces, the box’s interior is apparently big enough to hold sleeved Yu-Gi-Oh! cards, with a little extra finger room to boot.

“I created this build because, like many others and their pastimes, latching on to my hobbies of LEGO and Yu-Gi-Oh! has given me great comfort during some hard times in my life, and the strength of this idea is that being a fan of both pursuits is unlikely to be a unique experience,” the designer explained on the project page. “Two such beloved hobbies, both focused around collecting, should have plenty of overlap in their target audience.”

In fact, Zero Helix is ‘certain’ that a LEGO Yu-Gi-Oh! build would sell well enough to make it worth the LEGO Group’s time, pointing to the fact that franchise fans ‘spend an absolute fortune on cards and other merchandise’. The card game – based on the Japanese manga and anime of the same name – even counts a LEGO-inspired monster among its deck, and Zero Helix has suggested that Konami could include an exclusive card in the Ideas set to further entice fans.

The self-professed game designer has made a strong case for LEGO Yu-Gi-Oh! getting the green light from the Ideas review board, but its fate will ultimately be decided in the second 2023 review. It’s taken just over two years to reach 10,000 votes, and becomes the 20th project in this review stage. We’ll find out the result one way or the other in early 2024.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
