One more LEGO Monkie Kid 2021 set is retiring this year

Another newly-released LEGO Monkie Kid model looks set to have an extremely short shelf life, as the LEGO Group has bumped its retirement from 2022 to the end of this year.

80018 Monkie Kid’s Cloud Bike only arrived at LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores in March 2021, but is now already set to leave both online and brick-and-mortar storefronts by December 31. That’s not a hard-and-fast date: it just means the 203-piece set will disappear sometime between now and the beginning of 2022, rather than by the end of next year, as was previously the case.

It’s a pretty curious decision, not only because 80018 Monkie Kid’s Cloud Bike is relatively new, but because it’s also the first regular Monkie Kid set to come in at less than £20. The next-cheapest set is 2020’s 80006 White Dragon Horse Bike (also due to retire this year), which retails for £24.99 / $34.99 / €29.99, and things only get more expensive from there.

The majority of the bigger LEGO Monkie Kid sets, on the other hand, will remain on shelves into next year – including 2020’s 80012 Monkey King Warrior Mech and this year’s 80024 The Legendary Flower Fruit Mountain. The natural conclusion to draw is that the target market for Monkie Kid prefers bigger and more expensive sets (and, incidentally, those two models were the only ones specifically named as coming to Amazon US and Canada last week).

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
