Price, design, and noses: what fans think of LEGO Disney Snow White Cottage

43242 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Cottage is officially revealed – and a lot of people have a lot of opinions about the LEGO Disney set.

Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it’s off to another LEGO set reveal we go. 43242 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Cottage has been unveiled by the LEGO Group, coming in with 2,228 pieces and priced at £189.99 / $219.99 / €219.99. It not only includes a detailed rendition of the dwarfs’ cottages but a mighty minifigure line-up of ten minifigures, including all seven dwarfs, Snow White, Prince Florian, and the Evil Queen in Disguise.

Now that official photos are out in the wild, everyone has been getting their fill over the last 24 hours. Read on for a closer look at how the LEGO Disney set has gone down among the wider public.

The price suffers from the expensive Disney license

The reveal of 43242 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Cottage comes hot on the heels of last week’s unveiling of 10332 Medieval Town Square. Many people are quick to draw comparisons between the medieval-style of both builds. The ‘thatched’ roof of 43242 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Cottage, along with the old-school interior, means it could lend itself well to display alongside LEGO Castle sets, even if you’re not a LEGO Disney fan.

However, another parallel that could be drawn between the two is that they are priced at the same level, with just a £10 difference – but with a vastly different piece count. 43242 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Cottage has 2,228 pieces, while 10332 Medieval Town Square has more than 1,000 at 3,304.

“Thought this might be good with Castle stuff, but it’s the same price and release date as 10332 Medieval Town Square, and that one has a thousand more pieces and closable buildings,” commented one person on the reddit post discussing the reveal.

This price difference likely does come down to the license, but it’s worth noting (as other commenters were quick to point out) that the LEGO Disney set does come with a lot more minifigures, including some unique designs.

‘Sick of these half houses’

A closer look at the design of 43242 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Cottage also reveals that the back of the build is left entirely open, rather than being hinged to reveal the interior – much to some people’s dismay.

“I like the medieval theme but $220 is too expensive for half a house for me,” complained one reddit user. However, some people defended the design choice, with another replying: “It’s not half a house, it’s a display piece that is far more interesting to look at than just the exterior of a house.”

“But why not go the same route as 21326 Winnie the Pooh, a house with full exterior that also opens up?” countered the original commenter. “This setup looks a lot more like a dollhouse made specifically for play than it does a display piece, which doesn’t match the price tag and age rating [in my opinion.”

Indeed, the comparison with retired LEGO Ideas 21326 Winnie the Pooh is perhaps the most equal, being based on a similar fantastical IP and even being made from similar materials. However, the LEGO Ideas set has a smaller piece count and far less detailed of an interior – which is perhaps the compromise if you want a closer building.

“Playing a little devils advocate, if it was a closed back, then it would be a higher piece count and likely higher price,” observed another reddit user. “Perhaps priced out for a lot of people.”

Overlap with DnD

It’s not all doom and gloom though, with others already seeing the possibilities of 43242 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Cottage outside of being a LEGO Disney set.

“It could make a sick decor for a DND campaign,” wrote one reddit commenter, with another agreeing: “My thoughts exactly, this with the DnD CMF series in September will be a nice addition to the bookshelves.”

Indeed, if you’re not a Snow White fan, you could easily pair the cottage build with some of the Dungeons and Dragons minifigures we’re rumoured to be getting later this year. It’s worth remembering this series hasn’t been confirmed by the LEGO Group yet, so don’t get your hopes up too soon.

LEGO Star Wars fans manage to bring even this back to kamas

Moving onto minifigures, Snow White herself has a pretty detailed design, from her star-spangled skirt to her fabric ruff. Wait – fabric? Cue the angry LEGO Star Wars fans.

“I’m glad you could give Snow White cloth and not Fives,” commented one Instagram user on the official reveal of the set. It’s true, Snow White has the same amount of cloth that you’d need to give the Clone Troopers fabric kama. However, we’ve already had the explanation from the LEGO Star Wars designers about why we shouldn’t expect fabric kama – and it doesn’t impact Snow White (unless she’s planning a move into Star Wars battles).

Where are the dwarfs’ noses?

The minifigures for the dwarfs lean into an animated style, capturing each of the differences in their faces. However, one element that fans wish had been carried across from the animated film is the nose. The animated dwarfs have large, bulbous noses (especially Sneezy) that are a big facial feature for the team of miners.

“The dwarfs look so wrong without their big noses,” commented one person on Instagram, with another agreeing: “I’m sorry but the dwarves look terrible. They need noses.”

Disney fans want more, more, more

All in all, while there are some criticisms, the overwhelming response has been positive – with some people already calling for more LEGO Disney sets in a similar style.

After all, there are plenty of Disney movies and fairytales just waiting to get a detailed LEGO set. For this one in particular, 43242 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ Cottage will be available to buy for £189.99 in the UK, $219.99 in the US and €219.99 in Europe, launching on March 1 for LEGO Insiders and March 4 for everyone else.
