LEGO CATAN board game scores 10,000 victory points on LEGO Ideas

The latest LEGO Ideas project to rack up 10,000 victory points – sorry, votes – is a brick-built recreation of CATAN, one of the most iconic board games of all time.

Designed by Klaus Teuber and published in Germany in 1995, CATAN – originally known as The Settlers of Catan – is often regarded as a gateway title for board game enthusiasts, bridging the gap between Monopoly and deeper tabletop experiences. LEGO Ideas user Christoph Ruge is now hoping it might prove to be a similar gateway model for the LEGO Group, which will decide whether to produce it as an official set in the first 2023 review.

The rules of CATAN are simple: roll two dice to generate resources (each number is linked to a specific hex – and resource – on the board), trade with other players for resources you’re missing, then use those resources to build roads, settlements and cities, growing your civilisation. Ruge’s colourful build recreates every component of the game, from the hex-based board to each player’s colour-coded pieces.

CATAN has sold more than 32 million copies in over 40 different languages worldwide, so it’s easy to see the appeal of a LEGO version. Ruge’s design is even modular, in the same way as the real game, allowing for versatile board layouts to increase replayability. Whether it gets the green light is ultimately up to the LEGO Ideas review board, but Ruge has precedent here: he’s also the fan designer behind 21321 International Space Station.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
