LEGO Ideas 21339 BTS Dynamite officially revealed

Here it is: 21339 BTS Dynamite, one of the most eagerly-anticipated (and most heavily-teased) LEGO Ideas sets of all time.

Officially unveiled by the LEGO Group today, 21339 BTS Dynamite has been in the works for nearly a full year, based on a design by fan builders Josh and Jacob. The model captures the setting of the music video for Dynamite, the K-pop band’s first number one single in the US, and at first blush looks pretty close to the initial pitch.

“When we saw Josh and Jacob’s colourful design we knew it would be a hit and this was proved by how quickly they reached 10,000 views in the LEGO Ideas voting,” said Head of LEGO Product Group Federico Begher. “The BTS fans have already got behind the design and so it was important that we were as faithful to the original creation as possible. The set highlights creativity, passion and most importantly, fun! We can’t wait to see the fans building and displaying it.”

The original submission debuted on LEGO Ideas in April 2021, and went viral in May. Within a matter of days, it had skyrocketed to 10,000 votes (that’s the power of the BTS Army for you). The LEGO Group’s initial teaser for the set earlier this week is also the company’s most-liked tweet of all time, suggesting anticipation has been pretty high for 21339 BTS Dynamite.

The finished set combines familiar elements from Dynamite’s music video, which the LEGO Group calls ‘disco, doughnuts and dynamic dance moves’. Between the doughnut shop, record store and ice cream truck, 21339 BTS Dynamite seems readymade for recreating the entire video – which means there are also minifigures of every single BTS band member.

That’s RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V and Jung Kook, each decked out in one of their outfits from the music video. They’re sure to be a huge draw in 21339 BTS Dynamite, which includes 749 pieces and will retail for £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99. The release date is currently pegged for ‘early March’, and LEGO Stores have apparently been given permission to begin selling on March 1 – South Korea’s Independent Movement Day – at their own discretion.

That means you won’t necessarily find the set at your local LEGO Store on day one, but LEGO.com at least has it listed for a March 1 release as things stand.

This is the second LEGO Ideas set for 2023, following February’s 21338 A-Frame Cabin. I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
