An idiot’s guide to the LEGO VIP program

Don’t know where to start with the LEGO VIP program? Here’s everything you need to know about the LEGO Group’s loyalty scheme, including how to sign up and earn money off LEGO sets.

Whether you’re brand new to the LEGO hobby, returning to the bricks after years away or just flirt with the hard plastic every now and then, you might not know that there are incentives for shopping directly at LEGO.com or in branded LEGO Stores. As well as regular freebies with certain minimum spends, the LEGO Group has its own loyalty scheme and rewards program, named LEGO VIP.

If this is the first you’ve heard of the LEGO VIP program, here are all the fundamentals you need to get started – and even if you’re already a VIP veteran, there might just be something in here you don’t already know…

What is the LEGO VIP program?

If you’ve ever signed up to a loyalty or rewards club at a clothing store, supermarket or other retailer, you’ll already know what to expect from the LEGO VIP program, because it works pretty much the same way. The general idea is that every purchase made through LEGO.com or at a LEGO Store will earn VIP points, which you can then spend on discount vouchers or exclusive rewards.

How much does the LEGO VIP program cost to join?

While some brands charge membership fees to join their most exclusive clubs, the LEGO VIP program is completely free. You can sign up, earn rewards and unlock discounts on sets without ever paying a single penny. (Well, except for on the products you’re buying to accrue those points. Obvs.) You do need to be at least 18 years old to join, though.

How do you join the LEGO VIP program?

The LEGO Group has made signing up to the VIP program as easy as possible, offering three different ways to join: online, in person or over the phone. To get involved from the comfort of your sofa, head over to LEGO.com and hit the blue VIP button in the top-right corner of the screen. You’ll need to create a LEGO account if you don’t have one already.

Click here to go to LEGO.com and sign up to the VIP program.

If you’d prefer to sign up in person, simply head to your nearest LEGO Store. If over the phone works best for you, you’ll find the relevant number by navigating to the customer services section of LEGO.com.

How do you earn LEGO VIP points?

Simple: spend, spend, spend. If you’re going to buy LEGO anyway, doing so through official channels will not only help you qualify for whatever gift-with-purchase is currently available, but also return VIP points (once you’ve signed up to the VIP program). Some gifts-with-purchase are available exclusively to VIP members, so you’ll unlock access to those, too.

For every pound, dollar or euro you spend at the LEGO Store, you’ll receive a relative amount of points back to spend in the VIP Rewards Centre. More on that further down.

What can I earn LEGO VIP points on?

You’ll earn LEGO VIP points on pretty much everything you can buy from LEGO.com or in LEGO Stores, including LEGO sets, keyrings, minifigures and even Pick-a-Brick. One of the only exceptions is LEGO gift cards: you won’t earn VIP points when purchasing a gift card, but you will earn VIP points on anything you buy using that gift card.

Can you earn LEGO VIP points on Pick-a-Brick orders?

Yes, orders from the LEGO Pick-a-Brick service qualify for VIP points. The LEGO Group doesn’t always add them automatically to your account, though, so make sure to double-check that they’ve come through. If they haven’t, contact LEGO Customer Services and the situation should be rectified pretty quickly.

How many LEGO VIP points do you get per pound/dollar/euro?

This one is slightly trickier to answer, because it all varies depending on where you are in the world. If you’re in the UK, for example, you’ll earn eight points for every £1 spent. But if you’re in the US, you’ll get 6.5 points for every $1.

The good news is that while the numbers may differ, the values are all the same: and if you’re planning to spend your points on discount vouchers, it works out to 5% back on the total cost of your purchase. (The value will vary if you’re spending on exclusive rewards, but it’s consistent across regions.)

When do you get your LEGO VIP points?

If you’re shopping in a LEGO Store, your VIP points will generally be added to your account pretty much straight away. If you’re making a purchase at LEGO.com (or over the phone), your VIP points will be added to your account once the order ships. The LEGO Group says it may take up to 24 hours for your points balance to update, or for the points to be ready to spend in the VIP Rewards Centre.

Where can you find your LEGO VIP points?

Log in to your account at LEGO.com and you’ll see the number of VIP points you currently have in the top right of the screen. Click through to the VIP Rewards Centre (by hitting the number) and you’ll see what you can spend them on.

What can you spend LEGO VIP points on?

There are generally two different ways to spend LEGO VIP points: on discount vouchers to use at LEGO.com or in LEGO Stores, or on exclusive rewards.

Discount vouchers are available in denominations of £5, £10, £20 and £50, and you can stack as many as you like on a single purchase. You can redeem your points for vouchers in the VIP Rewards Centre. These vouchers can then be used online, in store or over the phone. You can also redeem VIP points directly at the till in LEGO Stores in some regions.

The VIP Rewards Centre also offers exclusive rewards to VIP members, from digital downloads and physical prints to merchandise, accessories and even boxed LEGO sets and polybags. These rewards vary throughout the year, so it’s always worth logging into the VIP Rewards Centre to see what’s available.

Head to VIP Rewards Centre to join the VIP program and start earning rewards.

Once you’ve redeemed a reward, you’ll have 60 days to use the code generated before it expires, so make sure you’re planning to place an order (or spend in store) within that timeframe. You can redeem one physical reward per online purchase, but discount vouchers stack.

How do you redeem a LEGO VIP discount voucher?

To use your LEGO VIP points on a discount voucher, first head to the VIP Rewards Centre at LEGO.com. From there, click ‘Choose Your Discount’ to open the window you see above. You’ll then be able to choose your preferred voucher, along with the quantity, by clicking ‘redeem’.

Each voucher will generate its own unique code, which will also be emailed straight to your inbox. When you want to spend them – and you’ve got 60 days to do so before they expire – simply head to LEGO.com and fill up your basket. On the order summary page (accessed by viewing your bag), before heading to checkout, enter your code(s) into the ‘Add a promo / VIP discount code’ section.

How much are LEGO VIP points worth?

The value of LEGO VIP points varies depending on what you buy with them. If you’re just looking for discounts on future LEGO purchases, VIP points are equivalent to 5% of your total purchase price. Spend £100 at the LEGO Store and you’ll earn 800 points, which will net you a £5 voucher. (In the US, spend $100 for 650 points, which you can redeem for a $5 voucher, and so on.)

If you’re shopping for any of the other rewards in the VIP Rewards Centre, you’ll find that the value of your points may change: an item the LEGO Group values at £20 may cost less than 3,200 points, for example. These rewards generally (but not always) work out as better value for money, depending on whether you agree with the LEGO Group’s assessment of its own rewards.

How do you get more LEGO VIP points?

As well as buying LEGO sets left, right and centre, you can maximise your LEGO VIP points haul by strategically shopping during double VIP points events. These promos generally take place four or five times a year, and offer the chance to earn twice the usual number of points on everything online and in-store – equivalent to a 10% return if you’re redeeming those points for discount vouchers.

The LEGO Group may occasionally limit its double VIP points events to specific sets or themes – its annual May the 4th event includes double VIP points exclusively on LEGO Star Wars sets, for example – so it’s worth double-checking exactly which products are included in each instance.

The latest LEGO double VIP points event runs from June 9 to 13, and includes absolutely everything currently available at LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores.

Finally, the LEGO Group occasionally offers small numbers of VIP points in exchange for completing surveys. You’ll find those in the VIP Rewards Centre.

Do LEGO VIP points ever expire?

Recognising that everything is fleeting and nothing lasts forever, the LEGO Group has placed an 18-month expiration date on VIP points. That means your stash will expire if you don’t buy anything from LEGO.com or the LEGO Store over an 18-month period. If you want to keep your VIP points beyond this period without making a big purchase, you could always buy a keychain or Collectible Minifigure to keep your account active.

If you’re shopping regularly, though, you won’t have anything to worry about: the 18-month timer only kicks in from the moment you last made a purchase.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
