Every new LEGO theme confirmed and rumoured for 2023 – December update

2022 only brought us one new LEGO theme in James Cameron’s Avatar, but 2023 already looks set to blow that out of the (way of) water with at least three new (or returning) themes.

While new LEGO themes are never a cert in any given calendar year – and especially new in-house themes, of which there have been precious few in recent years – we’re always happy to see the LEGO Group expand the scope of its current portfolio, even if that does mean taking the misses with the hits. And according to the rumour mill, which has been working in overdrive over the festive period, next year is shaping up to see that scope balloon beyond its current remit.

With the return of one classic LEGO theme already confirmed, here’s a rundown of every new and resurrected theme currently said to be coming our way in 2023…

LEGO The Lord of the Rings

The Middle-earth licence has already awoken from its slumber through three new LEGO BrickHeadz double-packs, all of which will launch on January 1, 2023. Whether any further LEGO The Lord of the Rings sets will follow through the rest of the year is still up in the air, but rumours suggest 10316 Rivendell will arrive under the LEGO Icons banner in March.

The silver screen’s original whip-cracking adventurer returns to cinema screens in June in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and the LEGO Group is thought to be bringing back its LEGO Indiana Jones theme to celebrate. The first four sets are rumoured to be based on the original trilogy, with a further four sets potentially based on the new film to follow.

LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog

The latest rumour fresh from the production line suggests 2022’s 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog – Green Hill Zone will be the springboard to a full LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog theme, with a total of five sets due to launch at some stage in 2023. They’re said to be minifigure scale, following in the footsteps of the LEGO Ideas set, and will consist of combinable courses. It’s also believed that a line of Sonic the Hedgehog BrickHeadz could be on the way.

LEGO Dreamzzz

Take this one with an extreme pinch of salt for now, but in July 2022 the LEGO Group registered a trademark for LEGO Dreamzzz across toys, clothing, stationery, software and entertainment. That’s a cocktail of classes that speaks to a potential big bang theme, a la LEGO NINJAGO, NEXO KNIGHTS and Hidden Side, and could well be the successor to the discontinued LEGO VIDIYO. That’s pure speculation at the moment, however, as there’s very little to go on beyond that trademark filing – for now…

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
