LEGO Ideas vintage rotary phone has unfortunate timing

After over a year of gathering support, a vintage phone project on LEGO Ideas has some unfortunate timing due to an upcoming release.

PrehistoricHamster051 has been gathering support for their Vintage Rotary Phone submission on LEGO Ideas since February 2024, and their model has finally reached 10,000 supporters. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have the best timing, thanks in no small part to the impending release of 31174 Retro Telephone.

The fan’s retro project is much more detailed than the Creator summer 2025 set, but their subject matter is undoubtedly similar. This may limit its chances of being approved for an official set.

Then again, 21345 Polaroid OneStep SX-70 Camera and 31147 Retro Camera are currently on shelves at the same time, proving that there’s room for two item recreations at once, provided they are substantially different.

For now, PrehistoricHamster051’s build joins the second 2025 review alongside 15 other submissions. 31174 Retro Telephone will be released on August 1, 2025, for £24.99 / $29.99 / €29.99 with 383 pieces.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.

Totally agree with you on this one – I’m confused – was hoping that we might get an Aaron Newman dragon build!! But you can but wish….

When I saw the piece count I was a bit worried as it seemed a bit low to make a decent scaled model of Toothless, and that it would end up being like a big Ninjago dragon… I felt that it wouldn’t be big enough to identify details..

Didn’t expect Chibi though – although it does sort of make sense piece count wise – because most of the build (especially wings) is shrunk down the really identifiable bits the head, feet, harness and tail are very distinguishable….

So I’m with you confused – don’t hate it – will definitely get it – but would so much have preferred a large toothless – and also a berk set with some of the other dragons as well
