What have the Romans ever done for us? Apart from possibly a LEGO set

The LEGO Ideas theme could one day turn back the clock by two millennia thanks to the latest submission to rack up 10,000 votes, which brings the Roman Empire to the review stage for the second time.

LEGO Ideas user HP_Brixxter’s Ancient Roman Temple originally qualified for the third 2022 review, but was rejected alongside 33 other submissions. Not to be deterred, they resubmitted the same project in December 2023 – and it’s now reached the review stage again by racking up another 10,000 votes. It will join the laundry list of LEGO Ideas projects in the growing first 2025 review, the qualifying window for which is open through May.

The 2,700-piece model depicts (as you might have guessed) a temple as it would have appeared in the days of ancient Rome. It’s minifigure-scale, modular, has a removable roof and pitches four characters: two guards, a senator and a patrician.

“The main sources of inspiration for the model were the Maison Carrée, France and, more importantly, the Sbeitla Forums Temple, Tunisia,” HP_Brixxter explains on the project page. “I put many hours of research to make the model as period accurate as possible: to get the colouring and structure of the building and the style, proportions and number of columns right.”

The LEGO Group has dabbled with ancient history through its Collectible Minifigures range, but has seldom tackled real-life depictions of eras like the one recreated here. Given this project has already faltered once at the review stage, its chances of making it through this time feel slim – but LEGO Ideas is often just a matter of timing, so you never know…

If it does get the green light at the review stage, it will go on to become an official set you can purchase on store shelves. We’ll likely find out the results of this review around October or November this year. For now, check out all the builds currently in contention in the table below.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.

Ancient history sets are the best! I’d love to see this one make it through if it might open the door for sets showing other varied cultures and time periods. Cool.
