Meet the LEGO MASTERS USA contestants: Flynn and Richard

Brick Fanatics is speaking to the LEGO MASTERS USA contestants to find out more about them and their passion for the hobby. Flynn and Richard enjoy putting together builds that tell a story

LEGO MASTERS USA is about to begin. Some of the best builders in the US are competing to see who will receive the title of LEGO MASTERS as they face tough challenges that will push their building ability to the limit.

Brick Fanatics is speaking to the builders who have their sights on the ultimate LEGO prize to get to know them better. In this exclusive interview, Flynn and Richard – who chose ‘Married Thespians’ for their team name – discuss their favourite themes and early LEGO memories.

What is your LEGO background?

Richard: I got LEGO for every holiday as a kid. I remember building a tall building – at least 18 inches, it seemed giant to me at the time – with my Uncle Mike when I was around seven or eight that had a working elevator. It was the best bonding experience I ever had with him.

Flynn: I had some LEGO as a kid but not really to the degree of many other builders in the hobby. I didn’t really come into LEGO until much later in life. It’s been a surprising new medium in my life and I really love it.

What are your favourite types of models to build? Where do you do your building?

Richard: My favourite models are large mechanical immersive storytelling MOCs (my own creations). I especially enjoy designing the mechanical parts. Landscapes are a favourite too. We build on an adjustable worktable in our dining room/LEGO room.

Flynn: I really enjoy putting together colourful and storytelling models. Things with a fantasy or monster theme are particular favourites.

Do you collect LEGO sets or bricks?

We sometimes buy sets, but mostly I get sets for the bricks. The Stranger Things set is pretty awesome though. I can’t wait to put that together. We also love the architecture in NINJAGO and really miss the fun colours and unusual pieces from the Elves sets.

Do you have any other creative hobbies?

Richard: I enjoy photography and do Linoleum Block carving and printing.

Flynn: I do a lot of stage performing. I also enjoy playing ukulele and singing, painting and knitting/crocheting.

LEGO MASTERS will premiere on Fox in the USA on Wednesday, February 5 at 9.00pm ET/10.00pm PT.
