Tiny LEGO Ideas chameleon’s race to 10K couldn’t be better timed

Talk about synergy: a tiny LEGO Ideas model of a chameleon has reached 10,000 supporters on the same day the LEGO Group revealed 21342 The Insect Collection.

Jimmi-DK originally tried to gather support for a brick-built chameleon back in 2021, but failed to stir enough interest from the LEGO Ideas community. This time round, though, their 259-piece model has managed to rack up enough votes to reach the review stage – and the final dash across the finishing line came on the same day the LEGO Group unveiled its latest Ideas set, 21342 The Insect Collection.

Whether the reveal of José María’s set contributed to those last few votes is tough to say, but you couldn’t really ask for better timing either way. This chameleon follows the same design language as the Blue Morpho Butterfly, Hercules Beetle and Chinese Mantis in 21342 The Insect Collection, perched on a brick-built branch – and while it’s obviously not to scale with the bugs, it would make a fine companion display piece.

It would also be one of the smallest retail LEGO Ideas sets in recent memory – and the fourth-smallest available to buy (so not as a gift-with-purchase) ever, if the piece count remained roughly the same. That would likely make it the most affordable crowdsourced set since 2018’s 21314 TRON: Legacy.

These factors may weigh into the review board’s decision to give Jimmi-DK’s project the green light or not, but we won’t find out either way until we learn the results of the second 2023 review next year. For now, the chameleon joins the ever-growing list of LEGO Ideas projects in this review stage. Check out all 44 potential sets in the table below.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
