LEGO Ideas project rejected twice before gets a third chance at success

A LEGO Ideas project that’s already been rejected twice – first by the LEGO Group, then by the community – now has a third chance at success in the second 2023 review.

Brick Dangerous’s Marine Life originally reached the review phase in February 2021, but was rejected by the LEGO Ideas team as part of the first 2021 review. It was then given a second chance as part of a public poll hosted in conjunction with Target in 2022, which saw three rejected projects compete to become a one-off LEGO Ideas set. BrickHammer’s Viking Village ultimately won out with 16,317 votes, while Marine Life only managed 6,732 votes from the Ideas community.

The builder’s sequel project Marine Life 2 (no prizes for that name) has now racked up another 10,000 votes, and will progress to the second 2023 review. Despite the appended number, the changes between this project and the original are mostly-surface level: there are 23 more pieces, and the design of the seahorse’s head and body have changed, but otherwise these are the same three sea creatures in brick-built jars.

That formula has worked for Brick Dangerous before, though, so you can’t blame them for trying again. And it’s clearly gone down well with the community, as the project has taken just four months to gather enough votes to reach the review stage. Whether that’s enough to convince the LEGO Ideas review board to finally greenlight the seahorse, jellyfish and clownfish remains to be seen.

We’ll find out one way or another with the results of the second 2023 review, which should be announced in early 2024. Brick Dangerous also has two projects in the first 2023 review – a telephone and hourglass – the results of which will drop later this year.
