Edvard Munch art screams to 10K on LEGO Ideas in less than two months

A brick-built replica of Edvard Munch’s iconic The Scream artwork has raced to 10,000 votes on LEGO Ideas in less than two months.

Taking its cues from Truman Cheng’s 21333 Vincent van Gogh – The Starry Night, Ideas user Spacemanship’s The Scream is a three-dimensional recreation of Munch’s masterpiece housed inside a black, brick-built frame. The original painting – which is thought to symbolise the agony and anxiety of the human condition – was created in 1893, and the LEGO version captures its striking colours and forms across 2,999 pieces.

Spacemanship pitches the model as a chance to ‘blow anxiety away’, which fits in nicely with the LEGO Group’s current mantra of mindfulness (it describes its 18+ sets as a chance for adults to unwind). But its similarities to 21333 Vincent van Gogh – The Starry Night may be the project’s undoing: the LEGO Ideas team typically picks new and unexplored designs and concepts (sitcom sets notwithstanding), and The Scream may be too close to a current model to get the green light this time round.

We’ll find out either way once the LEGO Ideas review board announces the results of the first 2023 review, which will likely be in October. Any projects that pass review will go into production as an official set, and eventually end up on store shelves. For now, The Scream – which was first submitted to the crowdsourcing platform on January 13, 2023, and has reached the review stage less than two months later – becomes the XXth project in contention in this round.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
